I agree and anyone whos been trucking for awhile will go to the company cause they want to long before they talk to a recruiter.Newbies not so much because they don't know about the many head games played in this industry.

What patty said! And thanks, it was good that somebody mentioned to check out the companies website FIRST. And yeah, hanging up the phone and having forgot to ask certain things stinks.

Another thing to ask once you asked all your other questions is how attentive is the safety dept to listen to the drivers? Is there an open door policy or I do I have to make an appt to see a certain someone?Vito you listed some excellent questions now how about making another list just for newbies and someone going to their school?

As far as I know, the safety people working with a trucking company all work for DOT. Am I right? I was told that it is set up that way so that Safety won't just rubber stamp everything the company does. They are to uphold the DOT regs regardless. Can somebody please verify this?

Good idea about "open door policy".

Yea, I suppose a separate list for CDL students would be good as well. Or maybe just take the existing list, and highlight the questions of (more) importance to them. Also, they would have other questions, not included here, like CDL reimbursement.

I'll think about it, see what I can do. Thanks

I mean about anything that could be a safety issue within the companies walls.Like a real bad dispatcher that won't take your word as law so you have no choice but to take it to safety and will they act on your complaint or file it under trash.

Nope, they work for the company to interpret and internally enforce compliance. As an independent, I am my own safety department & outsource only the drug testing consortium & testing.

    Other questions I would ask:

Average age of tractor fleet? trailer fleet?
Does the company own or lease their equipment?
    # of drivers per dispatcher?
    avg length of haul?
    Layover pay and requirements?
    Driver turnover %?
Does the company slip seat "your" truck when you're off?
GPS supplied? If so, are locations automatically entered on dispatch?
    In cab scanning?
    cell phone supplied or subsidized?
Any company discounts (e.g. show company ID to get x% off at Hertz, etc)

I would look up the companies CSA score on the FMSCA/CSA website. If their score on any of the basic catagories is above the threshold score (I think 65) , especially in vehicle maintainance, you may end up getting pulled in for inspections more often.
