If you only have a CDL Permit do you have to have a DOT medical card if you will be driving with a licensed CDL driver or do you only have to get one after obtaining your full CDL

I must say, your state DMV website sucks, lol. They have very limited info.

The federal laws are implimenting all states must have their medical card prior to issuing a CDL in 2012.

I did read on a OK CDL school website that a medical card is required prior to the CDL permit. Whether that is their rules or state rules?

Either way, you'll need it prior to the CDL. The school or company will let you know the process.

I didn't need one until I was hired. A medical card was not required to obtain a CDL. It was made clear, however, that without a current DOT medical "card," the Commercial part of the license was invalid. This was Oregon, five years ago. Things very well could have changed since then.

I do agree w/ Condo. The state DMV site is useless. JCW went to a school here in OK, and they got whizquiz'd and DOT'd the first day. Before they went for their tests.

My interpretation of the Fed is that before they issue you the gold card (beginning in 2012) you will need the DOT long form. The permit in OK is a paper permit.

Temporary Permit, no exceptions, if behind the wheel you must have a DOT Medical Card.

It breaks down simply like this:

To go to the DMV, take the knowledge tests and be issued a permit - NO, you don not need a medical card.

To train on/drive/operate a CMV while in possession of a learners permit - YES, you need a valid medical card; no exceptions, even when driving next to a CDL licensed driver.

At least that's how it's been...
