    Hello,

I just started driving OTR 1 week ago and purchased a RM530 based on the advice of trainer who has used many GPS' and settled on the RMM720.

I've noticed a few problems related to battery and I was not able to find any info. on RM battery problems.

    1. The battery doesn't last very long, mine gives out after 30 mins of daytime usage. Is this normal and and if so are there overcharging problems with always keeping the unit plugged in.
    2. The heat, it got so hot that it left an imprint on my plastic binder, had to hold it up to a/c all the way home. I can't even imagine how hot it would get if left in sunlight.
    3. It never held a full charge, even when plugged in it would rarely get to 100% (green light) and if it did it would go down and up all the time. I'm just wondering if this is on purpose to avoid overcharging.

I am using a 3.2amp and 1amp car charger with the factory cable, noticed heat on both chargers.

The GPS itself is quite wonderful with many useful features and I was just wondering whether I have a defective unit or all units experience similar problems.

Secondly does the Garmin counterpart to the 530 have similar issues?

I have the 720 and always keep it plugged in. I don't think these were made to run off of the battery for very long.

I run a 530...it stays plugged into its own outlet 24/7. Where it plugs into the back of the receiver, the connection could be a bit better. Im thunkijg that charger end of the cable may need a lil modifying.

I would replace the charging chord. The outlet may problems too .. Can you try a different outlet ? You should be able to leave it plugged in 24/7

Appreciate the replies. I'll try to change chord and the truck adapter. If all else fails I still have 15 days to return it so I'll try to get a new one or try out the Garmin.

Why would you have to get a new charging cord?

I mean if it is producing heat, then there is an internal problem with the charging system, not with the cord.

I have had charging chords go bad or produce heat sometimes due to the outlet in use.

    Process of elimnation

Being warm and as the OP put it "The heat, it got so hot that it left an imprint on my plastic binder, had to hold it up to a/c all the way home. [...]" seems to speak of a problem with the unit, not with the power source.
