Rand Mcnally 530 heat and battery concerns.

    5" units usually depending on what you have open and running will last 2-4 hours on battery.

    7" units usually will last about 30 minutes on battery due to the HD screen drawing more power.

    If the back of the unit is hot to the touch, then return it for a exchange. This is a hardware issue.

    My 520 stays plugged in, and when on battery it lasts for about an hour.

    But the OP's problem may arise from how he uses it, that being unplugged way too often.

    The batteries are not made to be like a deep cycle battery where you can charge them and them drain them in a cycle.
    If you use it in battery mode, then charge it a little bit and do it again and again - never keeping it fully charged - you will ruin the battery.
    It will never charge properly after that.

    That could also cause the heating issue.

    It sounds more like user error to me.
