I still hold a CDL Class A license and yes I do keep current on changing laws. Does this affect me - no, does this affect the way the timers are run on the TND - yes, so therefore it is in my best interest to understand changing laws no matter if they apply to cars or trucks.

How many years I drove has nothing to do with the support I give to drivers here on TTR. As stated it does help me understand the drivers point of view more than anything else. Just because I do not drive currently it sounds like it is sin and therefore not worthy of talking to drivers on TTR.

I hope you did as I suggested, if not then please call Rand Support on Tuesday if you are within your year warranty.

I am giving you field solutions to issues that you may have.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Regardless of what Mark is saying, (it might work but more than likely it won't, I tried it on mine) I called Rand and sent it back, they replaced the unit with a "refurb" and sent me two new power cords. Ones that fit tighter and are angled to prevent the cord from wiggling the connections loose. I still love the programming but I am going to wait a while to decide if I will continue to use Rand McNally. As I have stated before their customer service leaves a lot to be desired but you have to be determined that you will resolve the issue right then and there! If you get smoke blown up your skirt by the rep, kindly ask to speak to the next level and so on until your problem is solved. Remind them that THEY are there to serve YOU, not the other way around!
That's what I did after trying the methods that Mark suggested and they all failed. Again, the unit's programming is outstanding but the unit itself is not all that impressive as it doesn't stand up to the rigors of bouncing around in a truck!

You aren't driving therefore you aren't a CURRENT driver........PERIOD. You mentioned how long you drove. I have nothing against your THREE years of driving. Like I said before...my anger is with the product NOT YOU. I'm at a TA in Wildwood right now. They only have the 510 model....on clearance. They even said drivers keep bringing Rand McNally's back because of the same issues CURRENT drivers are complaining about all over this site. I even mentioned difficulties CURRENT drivers experience when calling customer service and lo and behold...truckin2 mentioned exactly what I said!!!!!!!!

I have had my TND 710 replaced/repaired 3 times now and it has failed again. It even showed up 1 time when it wouldn't connect to the computer to do updates. This last time I called for tech support they wanted to send it in again. When I balked at that they said I could upgrade to the 720 for $200. Which I think they should upgrade me to the 720 for nothing since this is the 4th time. They had someone next level up call me and I told him the same thing. He said he had to talk to his boss and would call me back in 15-20 minutes. No call back that was on 8-31. I called back today and the first level guy said that he would send a email to all of his supervisors. I still haven't heard back from them. They can't even call back. That isn't very good support.
    Thanks In Advance

I am really not understanding your anger in all this. You take offense that am here on this site assisting drivers. I never said I am a current driver. I said I still have my CDL Class A license. I said that my driving for 3 yrs OTR gives me a better understanding of the issues drivers face. I said I am here for support. What does my driving record or the fact that I hold a CDL license have to do with my willingness to be here 7 days a week for assistance/support?

As I have mentioned more than once on this thread and the other thread - I give a solution to the 710 power issue. I take it that the clerks know all about support and how to correct the issues? Or do they simply ring it up and give the driver another product? Next time ask the clerk's to explain all the features of each type of Truck Navigation Device.

I have seen the returns and in fact I have taken the returns and tested them in the store. 99% of what was returned there was nothing wrong with them. I did this last year all over the East Coast.

I will mention this again for your reference.

    1. Unplug the 710 from any power source for 12 hours.
    2. Plug into AC (house power) for 3 hours. Leave the 710 turned off.
    3. Turn the 710 on and once at the accept screen press the reset button.
    4. On the DC cord, take the USB end and slightly squeeze the USB end.
    5. Wrap any extra DC cord around the bracket to take the stress off the cable.

The whole bottom line is that my experience of being a prior driver gives me insight to the life style of what a driver goes thru. I have over 30 years of tech support/repair from the military and a major phone company.

If your 710 has issues of the screen going black, freezing, or simply locking up, try the steps above. This may/may not resolve the issue. If it does not resolve the issue then if you are within the 1 year warranty contact Rand Support.

    Thanks,
    Mark

For those of you thinking of buying a Rand McNally trucking GPS . . .

A couple mornings ago my TND 710 routed me down a dead-end RESIDENTIAL street trying to get to an address in an INDUSTRIAL PARK!! So, I had to BACK down the street in the dark to get turned around so that I could then use GOOGLE MAPS to get to the place!

In general the routing in the Atlanta area is TERRIBLE and very QUESTIONABLE in the Dallas area.

Also, a couple months ago, I think I was in either Kansas or Nebraska (an area where the roads hadn't changed in YEARS) it routed me down a street with an 11' 9" bridge. Of course it was pouring rain and there was no easy way to turn around. So, I had to call the local PD to handle traffic control while I got out of there.

So yeah, I'm really glad that I spent the $399 on this unit a few months ago and I'm surely going to spend another $89 for a map update, NOT!!

Did you report the two area's in question or just let it pass? If you give me the start/stop of the latest I can run on the latest maps and see if it has been corrected.

Map updates are send out to correct issues that are missing or incorrect.

As everyone has stated, maps are never 100% up todate.

    Thanks,
    mark

    Thanks for your response.

I've tried to use the "Tell Rand", uh, "feature" of the Dock application but have never received a response to anything I sent, so I stopped trying to send them anything that way.

And honestly, I've been too busy actually driving a truck, to take the time to help a company that is supposed to be the experts in maps, update their maps. :)

As for the latest issue, the addresses were:

    Start: 200 Industrial Drive
    Bean Station, TN 37708

    End: 5 Barber Industrial Court
    Villa Rica, GA 30180

The "End" address is where I was routed to an adjacent residential area.

The address where I was routed through a little town down a road with an 11'9" bridge was:

    6700 Muth Road
    Lordstown, OH 44481.

What was really disappointing about the routing for this location was that there are trucking terminals located on that road and it turned out that it was not very far at all off the interstate. Yet, my TND710 took me way out of route through a little small town and then down the road with the low clearance bridge. It wasn't even close to the way to get to the location, in fact, if I remember correctly, it actually routed me to the wrong side of the interstate.

And as for the "map updates" that you mentioned, you mean the ones that came out just a few months after I paid $399 for the unit and that the company now wants ANOTHER $89 in order for me to receive? Those map updates?

Welcome to our world! No ,seriously, at this stage improper power - that is why the screen was flickering- fried something inside, next stage is not turning on at all. My experience once you have that flickering immediately replace the usb charger or sqeeze with pliers. I buy mines at ebay from randmcnally for 10 $.
