Lifetime of the Unit is not forever. I would get something in writing as to how long the Map updates are FREE....

    Thanks,
    Mark

Well they are free "FOR NOW". I guess that's a step above the TND though.
The company claims updates are free until an EOL statement comes out for the unit.
That could be 1yr or maybe longer, who knows.

TND should offer at least the 1st map upgrade free, especially seeing it was one of the more (if not most) expensive units a trucker could buy.

TND is competitively priced along with the other truck navigation units.
Note the other company is charging a higher price for their unit, but the cost of future map updates is rolled into the cost.

Just how long do you think an EOL for a navigation device will be?

    Thanks,
    mark

The Garmin Dezl 560LMT can be found for $449 at Amazon direct.
The TND units range from $349 to $498 at Amazon.

    I don't have a crystal ball, but....
2yrs I think is a fair estimate before EOL..

Garmin states they will provide up to 4 per year included....How many does RAND offer? Any?
(I don't mind paying for updates as long as they are REASONABLE in cost...not $100 each)

I am not pushing Garmin, but simply responding to the one poster that said paying that much for updates
could push him to a competitor unit...and I agree. $100 is indeed too much for maps.

Here is the actual snipped stated information on Garmin's site:

Includes Free Lifetime Map and Traffic Updates
With free Lifetime Map¹ and Traffic updates, you always have the most up-to-date maps, points of interest and navigation information available at your fingertips. Traffic information is updated constantly, and map updates are available for download up to 4 times a year. Both features are ready to go, right out of the box, with no subscription or update fees and no expiration dates.

¹ Free Lifetime Map Updates entitle you to receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on the Garmin website, for this specific Garmin product only until this product's useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. The updates you receive will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased.

I also stated - do not quote me on that price yet... It is a guess, prob on the high side.

Their are many things behind the scenes that one does not see or hear about. Rand uses it's own truck attribute database overlaid into the map database. The Tell Rand's that the drivers submit. You think they go unnoticed? Rand gathers its Map database from the same 3rd Party, but that is where the similarity stops. So, much more goes into behind the scenes.

How much does the other company in % wise actually have into truck navigation units? very very small %. The sales of other navigation units offsets the losses. Rand only sells one type of navigation device. One for trucks.

When you go out to eat at a fast food place with just your spouse.. you spend around $12-$15. A normal dinner out at a nice resturant will run about $30-$50. Do you ask for your dinner to be free?

Their are ways and means to save money for a expense. You are not required to purchase the map update. Your TND will function just as well with the maps installed on it.

The price of the maps was beat to death several months ago. They are offered at a competitive price.

    Thanks,
    mark

My point was that if the map upgrade is $100, that's too much......
25% of the cost of the unit for updated maps makes no sense....

Let's hope your wrong on the price...$40-50 would be appropriate!

They are priced upon the market and being competitive with other similar Truck navigation devices and what they are charging.

    Thanks,

Just my pennies here.... As a Garmin 560LT registered owner.

When I purchased the unit, the first thing your instructed to do after charging the unit, is Update the OS and MAPS.

If a map update is released with in 90 days of the unit making a satellite fix, you can get that map update free.

Also, as a registered owner, when new map updates come out, they often send out special offers to purchase an update.

A one time update for $49.00 regular price is $69.00 to $89.00.
OR a lifetime update for $89.00 Regular price is $119.00

On my last Garmin unit, they EOL'ed it after 3 years, then stated that they would support it for up to 4 years.
