I have tollways disallowed and it's been routing me around them just fine. Would that really affect a side street 800 miles away?

It's from the pine cone truck stop on I-94 7 miles north of Jefferson, WI to the same address. I think it just likes to stick to interstates a little too much. I'm gonna run the extra miles since the company owes me money now anyway.

Also, it might be a bug. Cause it routes fine, but if you zoom out then zoom in on the destination, that's when it throws the error. I do like that it keeps trying to get you through or get you as close as it can. The garmin unit just gives up and leaves you lost.

the set to avoid could be causing extra miles, as one of the little oddball things we see is that it likes you to take lots of extra exits.

I would try and set to allow and let it recalculate and compare the mileage then.

I have to set out for a little while,, so I will check back in about 2 hours on what you found out.

    Thanks,
    Mark

I'm done for the day, I'll mess with it tomorrow and see if the road is marked or not on sunday when I get there. It might be another false flag from navtech. I've found a lot of those since I got the 465t and I run down those roads a lot so I'll tell you whenever I find one on the TND.

What you are seeing is one of the problems I have with the unit. It seems to add a lot of miles to the route for now reason.

At this time, if you use any avoids, it will cause problems.

I have had it route me to toll roads even with the Avoid tolls set.

Ok, so today I'm driving through MS on I-20 on my way to my final in Laredo, TX. My 11 is gonna run out in about 4 hours so I decide to start looking for a truck stop about 240 miles away. I go in and select choose destination/poi/my route/travel center. It pulls up the list like always. Cool, theres a Pilot right at the mileage I need on I-10 in Louisiana. So I select it and hit begin route. After it re-calculates all of a sudden its 298 miles away instead of the 230 something that was listed when I selected it. I tried selecting other truck stops it listed and it did the same thing with them. I did notice that the closer I get to a poi the smaller the gap becomes between what is listed and the actual distance. This kinda makes planning ahead a pain.

The feature you have found is due to as the crow flies vs driving.

A lot of gps units do this.

POI is a dot on a map database, you are a dot on a map database.

It looks at your dot, the POI dot and figures the distance between the two dots. it does not look at what you have to actually drive.

When you say, yes thats where I want to go, then it looks at the route to the POI. So the miles change from the crows path to the roads path.

Mine does the same thing. Just about made me late for an appointment. Cuz I selected the destination while sitting at the ts the night before I left for the appointment. Went ahead and planned when to get up and leave and everything. Next morning I get up and take off for my destination. A little ways down the road it tacks on like an extra 40 to 50 miles. Good thing I allowed myself an extra hour to get there.

The PC*Miler Navigator systems have a "calculate route" function, so that you can determine the miles to a location, even if the system has not pin-pointed your location (ie. at a t/s, as noted in a previous post). Does the TND 500 not have that capability also?

After calculating and determining the route and selecting drive, it will display the "as a crow fly" miles, till the unit starts moving and the proper location is set. Then it will revert back to the routed miles ... as was displayed in the "calculate" mode.

The PC*Miler systems have a large icon in the bottom right corner displaying if it has a pin-point location or not.

Does the TND 500 offer the same type icon and how easy is it to see or display?

    In answer to your post.

The PCMiler unit has an extra step in its programing.

The TND does not have the drive button.

When you enter an address, you have to do a route calculation to see the route and the routed miles.

When in route and you want to see what POIs are at some point, it will show the miles from your point to the POI "as the crow flys", it will not give you the actual drive miles untill it is selected as a destination.
