I used mine yesterday to avoid the "chicken house":D:D in pa. The brain is a beautiful thing keep using it. My nephew is in trucking school now. I asked him, did he doing map reading? He said, no. I told him your school is not teaching you properly. He stated we have GPS for that. What happens when it doesn't work or lost signal o_O:eek:. That was his expression :D:D.

Well, my friend, you are showing your age. With modern devices, it makes a road atlas obsolete. I know people that literally can't read a paper map. I, on the other hand, don't like gps maps, I still have an old flip phone, as handy as they may be, because it doesn't give me a big enough picture of where I am. I just got back from a 2900 mile car trip,( see "Full Circle" post) Co to UP, the R-Mc road atlas( non motor carrier one) was paramount. I had clips of the states I was going through. I "pre-looked" where I was going, and a piece of cake, really. The only "problem", is either that print is getting smaller, or these old peepers ain't what they used to be, and it's best not to drive and try and focus on the map.
Years ago, we depended on the motor carrier atlas, everything from scale locations( and ways around them), weight foolishness, low bridges, you were a fool to truck without one. Today, that's just not the case. Electronics, you have to admit, are pretty cool, even though I kind of refuse to join that crowd, but make no mistake, back then, it was called the "Road Bible" for a reason,,,and they made a dandy seed cleaner too,, What did he say? :D

Reminds me of the time I saw a guy creeping into my lane while passing him, I look over when we're eye to eye, and he's fumbling trying to get his reading glasses on with the Rand McNally spread across the steering wheel.

I guess my question is, were these just coincidental fotos or where you reading and responding to threads while coasting down the highway? It seems like it but you never know.

    201 and tscottme Thank this.

That was todays Public Service Announcement. Now back to our movie, Beach Blanket Bloodbath, starring Peggy Cass, Orson Bean, Kitty Carlisle, and @Frank Speak as the Count.

Wait until the new year version comes out and the truck stop puts the previous year MCA on sale for 50% off.

I trucked for 33 years and never used a gps. called customers got final mile directions. Or called fire dept and got truck route directions in big cities. My road atlas never let me down. Now GPS reliance is funny. Watch the ######### get lost or on restricted routes.

Plenty of drivers got distracted with paper items like the road atlas before most people got distracted exclusively with electronic devices. Getting distracted is a violation regardless of the cause of the distraction.

Road atlas doesn't stop working or lose connection with the network. It has a wealth of info, even for drivers with no data plan. It seems foolish for someone to choose to ignore a source of data, but people make choices.
