so i was headed westbound on I64 in Kentucky minding my own beeswax. i come up to the scale in Morehead, and as soon as my steer tires hit the scale, the red light was blinking.
sign says pull to the right, and bring in all paperwork. si i take just the manifest and left the log book in the truck. i had a 20 year veteran beat into my head that if i ever got randomed, leave that log book in the truck. never take it inside.
so i go in and she was like its random inspection day, what are you hauling? tractor parts for TSC i replied. so she looks over the manifest, and says get me your permit book and trailer registration.
permit book was good but there was no trailer registration. the thing had just come out of the shop. i know i should have checked before taking the trailer, so that was on myself. she didnt give me a ticket, just made me go out there and get the make and VIN and tag number.
she said that around 4pm everyday is when she starts doing her random checks. and i saw how she does that too. she looks up, sees a truck and reaches out and presses the red light.
so, i passed. no problems anywhere. $35 bucks for me from the company for passing a random DOT.
be ready if you go across that scale, you will eventually get it there. very nice lady.
granted everyone gets on average about 3 randoms a year, but it helps to know when a certain scale house is on a hot streak for them.
keep the wheels spinnin' and the beavers grinnin.

Any scale you cross you should be prepared for a random paper check. I had one in Mississippi yesterday. It's really no big deal!
-
Heck I've had 3 and only been driving for 3 months, guess I'm good for the rest of the year!
-
I don't agree with your 20 year Veteran. Your just wasting time if you don't take your logs with you.
Now a port of entry like Wyoming or New Mexico I don't take my log cause they only look at your cabcard & IFTA permit. -
They seem to come in fits & spurts for me. When I started this job I had two level 3's & one level 1 in my first month. In the year since, I've had one level 1. The first level 1, I was not asked to show my logbook!

they do a good business there all day long.

I may be jinxing myself here but, in 18 years I have one level 1 and one level 3. What am I doing wrong?
-
really not a big deal. but leaving your logs? you got something to hide? if they are that jacked up its only a matter of time before someone sees it. just bring everything the first time. when you have to run out to the truck twice is when it will piss someone off the day you get THAT guy doing your inpection. being prepared and professional helps ensure its smooth and easy every time. if you do have shifty logs thats when he just might take a closer look.

just looking to cool thats what yer doing wrong.
