Hey everyone, I have a bit of a random question. I'm curious about how often truck drivers get in and out of their trucks on a typical workday for any reason—whether it's work-related tasks, going to the bathroom, stopping by a supermarket, or other errands. It might vary depending on the type of trucking you do, so please also share what type of trucker you are. Can anyone share their experiences or thoughts? Thanks!

In logging probably 25+ times a day. Even more in winter/spring if you've got to throw chains on/off 2 or 3 times.

There are as many kinds of trucking as there are truck drivers. Do you mean OTR drivers?
I'm betting you do. I'm in and out 5 or 10 times a day on a regular day.The_vett and Ttruck_Hustler_001 Thank this. -
I never even thought about putting the chain on and off my car. Thank you for the new insightLast edited: Jul 25, 2024

Cryo driver here. I only get out the truck about twice on the road. Half way there and half way back for a quick restroom break. But during delivery I stand outside for up to 2 hours. Or if it’s a multi stop then about 30 min to an hour standing outside for each.

So you’re saying that once you get out of the truck, you don’t need to get back in to do any maintenance or grab stuff you need? I’m amazed you’re standing out there for so long!The_vett and viper822004 Thank this.

Yeah, you have to be watching your pressure at all times. You can bring a lawn chair if you want but most of the time I rather stand. You get used to it.
Don’t understand what you mean about maintenance and grabbing stuff I need.The_vett and Arctic_fox Thank this. -
With the last job. My trips were about an hour and I had to get out to load or unload.
With my current job. I'm not allowed to smoke in the truck. So any chance I can park for a few minutes and do a walk around.Last edited: Jul 25, 2024

Yup can confirm, when loading a tanker of any kind, as a rule your outside for however long it takes to load it unless you like splaining to the EPA why you just out 10 barrels of crude oil on the ground (record is held by one guy i knew of who fell asleep and overflowed his truck and poured almost 500 barrels out into a creek.
On topic. It depends on the day. If i got a super long haul like 1k+ miles where i wont ve stopping to load or unload and start with fuel. Maybe two or three times for the whole day. Once in the AM to take a leak, once in the middle to do the same, and one when i stop.
Day where im doing a lot of short hauls or having trouble staying awake or having a leg cramp so need to get out and walk around. it can be as much as a couple dozen times.The_vett and Ttruck_Hustler_001 Thank this. -
Depends greatly on the job. A road driver may get loaded, and never get out until they get to the destination. A garbage truck driver or package delivery, probably a hundred or more times a day. A store delivery, probably a dozen times a day. 10 times a day was about my limit.
