Another way would be to do a load out. You’re friend could make another $2-$4k maybe, and give the Customer a discount, on moving the empty Trailer. That’s a common practice with empty Trailer delivery Companies like Trailer Transit. The O/O should make as much as a Loaded rd trip. Regardless. $3000 Load plus $5000 Trailer delivery. Win win. Add a power only Load to anywhere. Then BT home. That would be even better.

Bobtail insurance is probably the most misunderstood thing in trucking. I have my own numbers my policy covers me loaded or empty. With or without my wagon.

Bobtail insurance is a seperate policy for guys who lease on to a carrier. The carriers insurance only covers them when under dispatch. So the bobtail policy is for when the guy is headed home or drops a trailer to go to Walmart etc. it actually has dick to do with being bobtail. In this instance since the trip is haul a trailer up and bobtail back that would technically be under dispatch. Although he has his own numbers/insurance that’s a mute point

That's one heck of a deal. Take that deal all day long. That's over 4 dollars per mile for the entire trip. Now, I am writing this under the assumption that what you said was correct. He's properly insured. When talking about properly insured, I'm assuming that also means due dilligence on the trailor. That could be the tricky part. Overall, it sounds like an awesome deal. I wouldn't bobtail back though. I would capitalize more. I would power only back, so instead of a trip average just over 4 bucks per mile, if you power only back, you turn 1600 miles into 6 dollar per mile for the whole trip. He could power only back for at least 3 on the west coast with current rates, and likely turn that trip into 6500+2400= 8,900 bucks.

That’s right. It’s actually called Unladen Insurance. Simply refers to Driving while empty, Bobtail, anytime you’re not Loaded.

He clearly stated the person has his own authority. There is no bobtail insurance in that situation. His Liability covers it all 24/7.

If he actually had his own numbers he would know that. There are lots of posters here that aren't even lease ops. Maybe he's one of them.

My friend has been completely independent with his own CA authority only since the late 90's. He doesn't normally leave California actually.
That's why I was asking for him.
I also am completely independent with my own equipment and I run Interstate.

I've been trucking since 1990 so I'm well aware of compliance. Don't even get me started. I just asked a simple question for a friend and I didnt have an answer for him so I thought I'd ask the forums because I respect you guys here.
    Take care
