I drive a new truck because I find it more enjoyable and more comfortable than when I drove an old truck. I also like the depreciation for 3 years.

There is a reason gliders were so popular. Obviously a lot of people, including big companies like Schneider did their math before buying them.
I did my own math and built my own gliders, however I do know that majority of people who try to mess with old stuff fail at it, usually because of crappy mechanics

Of course, I am not arguing that old is absolutely better than old. In my case I found that old Volvos ride just as good as new ones, they just now changed the cab design after 27 years. I would never attempt to rebuild an old Columbia for example

Those series 60 turbos are getting expensive. I’ll bet they’re up to $800 for a new BW available off the shelf at any Truckpro. Then the labor is a killer. Took me 3 hours last time. Hottest most humid day of the year in Hammond Louisiana. Got a motel, since my wife was with me, then had to reschedule my morning appointment for the same evening. Just about wiped me out. Cost a total of $850.

Insurance is cheaper on my brand new one than my old one.
Cost of ownership, I expect, has a lot to do with what one does with the equipment.
I have had several 30 year old units. I do a lot more to upkeep them than the average owner. Apparently.
I could have gotten a lot cheaper brand new unit vs what I did buy, that would have prolly cost a lot less to own over 5 years if I was a “just keep truckin” type of guy who never did anything I didnt absolutely have to repair or maintenance wise on new equipment.

I think if running old equipment was, across the board, a wise financial decision, it would be more common in carriers that were sizeable.

Rebuilt this one. Had way more money in it than it was even close to being worth. At the end of the day it was still a 2003. I also tossed a bunch money into a 1995 W900L because I thought it was what I wanted.

When I drove a company truck pulling flatbed before buying my FLD I got a new T800 in 2005 and in 2008. When I got my own I made do with what I could afford at the time and forgot how nice new stuff was. Then after selling my W900 at the end of 2016 I went back to my old boss and got into a brand new 2017 T800. That’s when I decided that when I buy a truck again it would be as new as I could afford. Ended up with my previous 579 and then ordered the new one I’m in now. I don’t enjoy working on stuff anymore unless it’s something fun.

I’m not trying to disagree with you but all of your points are why I say brand new and not a 2nd hand emissions truck. You seem to be speaking of an out of warranty 500k+ mile unit that’s been maintained like 95% of trucks which is piss poor.

My X15 won’t need overhauled and if it does it’s paid for by warranty. I don’t know anything about 1 box but I haven’t had a DPF go bad since prior to 2017. Turbos the same. $170/hr warranty covered.

Aero I’m just saying always strive to be the best you can be and put that savings into your pocket.

    Depreciation is lovely.

200k to 50 to maybe 75k so what?

I guess last point would be any local shop worth a #### has the software to plug in and know exactly what’s going on and charge no more then $100 At that point you can make an educated decision how to proceed whether to get the dealership involved or not.

06 5900 deleted isx was the last truck
The truck before it was an 89 379 with a B model cat. Maintenance was similar between the two.

Quality of life is exactly the reason to buy new. No more spending my time off fixing an old truck. And my payment was 3900 a month and I paid 6k per month to get it paid off. Now I have a paid off 4 year old truck. And I haven’t turn but one load in two weeks.

I’m not going to argue back and forth. I know what works for me and it sounds like more than a few here, and it’s not an old truck.

I mentioned it before, for a carrier with multiple trucks and hired drivers, new is the only good option.
How come your insurance is the same? For physical It costs me roughly $100 per month for truck and trailer with $25k coverage each .

I guess I was spot on with Isx. That's a common problem with a deleted isx and turbos. A good proper tune usually helps resolve that problem forever. I believe a turbo for new X15 is close to $10k compare to $5-7k on ISX.
