I get it. Some guys kinda wanna have control of their own thing. They’re already older and they’re not gonna wanna grow. I guess for liability, if you don’t have a whole bunch of assets, all they can go after your insurance. They can’t take for what you don’t have.

As far as liability goes it's less about not having assets as much as it's about having assets that are protected under your states bankruptcy law. For example in South Dakota,Florida or Texas you could have a 30 million dollar house paid off and file chapter 7 bankruptcy and keep the house. Most states protect your retirement accounts in bankruptcy fully up to 1 million dollars if not more. There's also advanced strategies like equity stripping,trusts and more. Suffice it to say you can be very wealthy get a 100 million dollar judgement against you and not lose much at all. Proper planning is essential in how you allocate your wealth.

I think he's just grumpy from living in a truck so long, working hours for free every week and being bossed around by a company dispatcher who's never driven a truck.

I've been thinking about buying some equipment for around the yard for the tax write offs as well lol. I figure I could start a little side construction business with it, but that would probably push my taxable income too high after I finished writing off the equipment.

No that's not why the taxes are so much higher there. That's just free taxpayer money they can waste. The real reason is because Chicago area government is massively wasteful, bloated, corrupt. They need Elon swinging a chainsaw around.

Indeed and they completely pretend all the time spent dealing with repairs and maintenance, office work, sales efforts etc etc never take place. There is no time off when running a small company alone.
