My cousin farms/ranches with his in-laws. The dad has been slowing down and wanting to retire. They advertised locally for help offering mid-20’s with a house to live in. No takers. So they’ve had the same South African the last 3 years. Pay him 19-something per hour, give him the house to stay in, and they have to give him a pickup to drive.

Not sure why this is turning into a country vs city thing when it comes to poverty. Plenty of poor people in the cities too and we were never proud of it. As kids we were embarrassed to wear hand-me-downs, buying our food with food stamps, shopping at thrift stores and generic clothes.

$20 is #### pay for farm work. Walmart starts out at like $14.50 for the day shift, $15.50 for the night shift. Considering Walmart comes with healthcare, 401k + match, paid vacation, you work in air conditioning/heating, you have a clean toilet to use throughout your shift, your body may be sore but not nearly as sore as working on a farm. Pretty sure Walmart gives employee discounts too. And Walmart has advancement opportunities and stores all over the country to transfer to.

I'm just using Walmart as a baseline here, but all in all when you take Walmarts benefits into account then your $20 farm work (which probably is not a W2 for your farm work either) is the same as a $15 hour job somewhere else.

Why would a man take up your job over somewhere else? The birthrates in this country have plummeted so a lot of men don't have kids or a wife to provide for either. They're going to choose the easiest job they can get instead of busting their ### at a job for $20 an hour with no room for advancement and no transferable skills elsewhere.

Or if they do have any ambition, then they #### sure aren't going to bust their ### on a farm in which they will never have ownership over.

I'm not saying this to be disrespectful or rude to you, but rather to state the reality of your situation as to why you can't find sufficient help for $20 per hour on your farm.

IMG_8166.png The 2-3 houses for under $150k are double wides in old folk communities. Goodluck otherwise.

Yeah…..the housing prices I’m reading in this thread blow my mind. The only house for sale around here under $350,000 is a condemned meth lab! The double wides that are that cheap, don’t come with the lot it’s parked on…..that’s an extra $1000+ per month.
