Are you sure the rattle is with the engine? Any experience I have had with a bad bearing (gas or diesel) has been a knock not a rattle.

its like shaking a wore out bearing w ur hand how it has alot of slack and its realy loud when im pulling a hill in the higher gears. does it most around 1800 rpm. i think its in the drive train some where. its not a knock or a ringing but kinda in between.

When you change the oil punch the oil filter, and let it drain then cut the top off, and look at the paper for metal flakes, also use a magnet. Inspect the drain plug also.
At an Idle using a bar against you skull, you can listen to the cam boxes for a bad roller.

i went through this a while ago. my rattle ended up being a loose exhaust band clamp.when i would get in a hard pull i thought the truck was going to fly apart.

oil filter was fine no signs of metal. i realy dont think it is an engine issue. i will check all my exhaust tomarrow. thanks for the suggestions. could the ride height be causing the drive line to bind?

How about a broken baffle in muffler? I've seen it before and it showed the strongest in top gear in a hard pull.

Is it a loud knock? Sounds like your about to drop a piston I have chased this down on cummins m11 and n14 a few times its fuel knock its hard to pin point and most of the time they will pass a injector test normally its caused by the injector being damaged internal and a few times I have found injectors with broken springs!!

with the shifter boot out u can hear a slight tapping that follows the rpms. the main problem isnt realy a knock a very loud rattling sound that comes up through the shifter it gets so loud when pulling a hill it will drown out the radio. its not like an exhaust rattle all of that is tight checked today and ride hieght is 12.5 from weld on axle 2 bottom frame rail

Sounds like might be an injector I went the same thing the first time I came across this problem checked the truck out inspected trans, diffs, suspension, cab mounts its like a realy load rattle its hard to describe let off the long pedal it goes away get back in it and there it is. Might be worth pulling the valve covers and jakes and seeing if you can see a broken injector spring or sometimes you can find it with a heat gun on the manifold might be hotter or colder on that cyl.can you get it to rattle if you put it on gear with brakes set and power brake it?that is how I finally found out where it was coming from
