I just finished a CDL school and took my state cdl road test and got my license with my prosthetic leg. My problem is I apply for a job and had a DOT physical and passed but they checked the box that says accompanied with a SPE certificate. When the carrier got the paper work their Med dept called and told me I could not go to Orientation until I got the SPE. So I went to the FMCSA web site and got the application I also called them and found that I'm not allowed to drive more than 100 air miles without it. They also said that I will have to take the CDL road test again. I took the exact same test any other driver takes and I have to do it again in order to drive OTR. Are there any other amputee drivers out there who have gone through the process that could share any info I would greatly appreciate it.

    Wow, thats some ####, man.

I can somewhat understand you needing the med waiver but taking the test again?

Who did you call for that info? Maybe its wrong?

If not maybe you went to a school that will let you retest.

Good luck and post what happens/ find out to help others 7n the future.

I can only assume it's because the FMCSA wants to ensure you did not get a license before you had the leg amputated

I have been an amputee for over 4 years and just got my CDL in july this year. The paper work is confusing but it sounds like I will have to take a test just for them. The State passed me so I thought that should be good it is for anyone else. My classmates are driving I took the same test. I have been trying to get a job within the 100 air mile rule so that I can get driving but companies doing in state want at least one year OTR experience. It's not going very well so far. I have been applying anyway.

And whats the big deal with a road test? You have to take one at every company you go to. You're already crying at something being unfair, not making sense, get used to it jack, that is trucking

Had a friend of mine that didn't take care of himself. Wound up in the hospital because his diabetes was out of whack. Had to get on the shots, and that knocked him out of a truck. I told him to do his homework. He wanted a pity party, but I told him there was a way around it. He did some investigating and found out about a waiver. So, he sent in an application, filled out some forms, sent in a bunch of letters from a doctor (I dont know if it was his doctor or one of their 'approved' doctors), didn't dot an I and forgot to cross a T and had to redo everything. Well, he got the waiver. And it got him back in a bigrig. HOWEVER, there are a different set of rules that he must abide by. Unfair? The unfair part is he has to prove himself to a committee of ninnies and housewives who cant drive, live utterly pathetic lives, but feel that drivers are the worst evil on the highways. And he is under the microscope. I believe that he told me that he even has to keep a log of his sugar level every morning, 1 hour before he departs.

    But those are the rules...

You want to drive, amigo? A roadtest is holding you back. Take the roadtest. You passed it once, I am certain you will pass it again. Take that test. Pass that test. You've had tougher challenges. Look at them with contempt. Destroy all obstacles. Come back here and tell me that you got what you were aiming for, and I will call you WINNER and the Brethern shall raise their next adult beverage in your honor.

I've been trying to get a cdl for the past few years, today i went in for a dot physical and the doc refuse to do it because i only have one arm. I was told that i have to go get a skills performance exam and the sad part is that no one in my city would give me one not even a physical therapist They claim to not know what it is, i was wondering was the functional capacity exam is considered the same thing. Its really hard to get a job being able disabled. I finally found something that i know for a fact that i can do but the doc in my area are refusing to help me. Can anyone in this forum give me any suggestions or can please give me to i formation that i need? My name is sam...PM me if you can help...thanks
