Do they still offer a mileage or percentage option to I/C's? Which did you choose? I'm curious how all this works. I hear some guys say the end result over being a company driver is negligible and others say they do much better than us. I suppose every situation is unique.

I believe some terminals do offer a mileage option, but Morrow only offered percentage.
So far I'm doing better financially, but I won't be able to tell how much better until I complete the year, pay the taxes, and compare to my best year as a company driver. But there's the intangible of owning my own truck that I value pretty highly.david123abc Thanks this. -
Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Is there any difference in the dispatch experience for you as an IC verses company driver? Are you given a choice of loads or is it just like it was as a company hand? Do you run more dedicated now than you did before? -
Hey guys great info here. I'm currently going into my 2nd week of CDL training and currently have my permit. Does Superior still accept student drivers and do they hire in the Memphis, TN. area? Just curious if you guys know I'll try to give recruiting a call next week. Thanks in advance!

Call the Memphis terminal directly and ask to speak to the terminal manager. I haven't been there in a good while but the last time she was griping about not having enough drivers.BDJ Thanks this.

I've seen little difference so far. Once in awhile I get a choice of loads, mainly from my home terminal, but most of the time the load is sent to the qualcomm with no information given about the rate it pays. Of course I can refuse any load, but that puts me at the bottom of "the list" so I haven't done that.
My terminal has few dedicated loads and I'm rarely offered one in the system either. -
I don't think I would like that too much if I was paying the truck expenses. I imagine over time you would get a pretty good handle of what pays what. Are there any loads you wouldn't do again because they didn't pay enough?
-
I document all the numbers on every load I run and calculate the per mile rate after fuel costs. I also divide the net pay by the number of days required for the run, so over time I'm getting a pretty good idea of the loads I would prefer to do.
And yes, there are a couple of loads that paid well under the average per mile rate, and if I'm put on one of those again we'll have to have a discussion about whether that's all they have available or not. And the California loads that I used to love as a company driver haven't worked out so well as an IC. If there's no backhaul the deadhead to Pasadena is a killer. And I'm told the load out of LA pays really low. So, unless I am assured of a load out of Sacramento, I'll have to decline the west coast run.wsyrob Thanks this. -
I always thought that about the Ca loads. I have never seen a SPCR O/O washing out at LA Tankwash. I have seen a few in Sacramento. I was talking to a Cincy driver a while back. He told me the O/O's there just love one load out of the rail transloading facility that only goes about 12 miles.

Thanks RD, I would appreciate knowing the mileage you've run so far this year!Last edited: Jul 3, 2013
