i was wondering if anyone works for Con-way or knows anything about them.
Specifically, have they merged all of their regional LTL divisions---i.e., Conway Central, Conway Southern, Conway Western etc. into one company simply known as Con-way LTL or are they still 0perating seperately?

Several changes are happening within corporate Con-way.
#1 - Yes, the LTL divisions are merging into one - no more regional divisions.
#2 - Some (I believe about 15%) of the shuttling freight between centers will no longer be done by LTL drivers, as there were too many empty trailers being hauled back and forth. This 15% will be shifted to one-way haulers in 53' trailers.
#3 - The purchase of CFI is complete, and CFI is now slowly disappearing. Check out the CFI web-site. The new '08 tractors are going to be white with the five shades of blue up-swept stripes on the cab. Trailers will be retired with new trailers coming in with the complimentary blue stripes on them. The new trailers are super-single tired - not sure how I feel about that just yet.
#4 - Negotiations are still underway to allow Truckload tractors fuel at Con-way centers (cheaper fuel). And many centers also have automatic truck wash bays.
That's all that I know without delving into details. Hope this helps. I'm a truckload team driver, and enjoy my work and the company. -
I was with Conway for 13 years as a local driver. They are a good company to work for.Benefits, pay scale are close to what the union carriers make. They do have profit sharing but 2007 was not much of a profitable year for most carriers so the money paid out was proably low. They did away with their pension plan,Jan. 2007,but they increased their share into 401 k.When I left in 2006,I was making about $23.00 per hour. Now,you do earn every penny. If you do hire on to a local terminal, for city work or linehaul, you start at the bottom. You can't pick what you want to do or your hours or your start time. There is a senority system in place,so as you work your way up,you might go from nights to days, linehaul to local. Also they drive regardless of the weather conditions. The only time I ever shut down was if the state or local goverment declared a state of emergency.Dock work is mandatory.Average 3 to 5 hours per day.The pay is the same as if you were driving but you will be unloading or reloading trailers on an open air dock.If it's 10 degress outside,it's 10 degress on the dock.If it's 90 degress outside,it's 90 degress on the dock. You might ask why would I want to do this? The pay is good, work is Monday to Friday and it's real good exercise. They are rigid in their rules and regulations, sometimes too rigid, management and supervisors have the final say.Disputes don't usaully go in the drivers favor.Again, this is for drivers that run from a local terminal, not the truckload division.I have met a few truckload teams and they seemed happy and were getting plenty of miles. It's up to you as to whether you what to run local or longhaul.Good Luck.

I worked there briefly in 01..pay was $13 # hour and topped at $18 taking four years to get there. Worst job I have ever had. Every employee there from dock workers, to linehaul, to shuttle abd P&D's watched each other waiting for someone to screw up so they could be the first to run and tell a supervisor. If you like handtrucking freight with someone on your butt constantly this is a great job. I've worked hard all my life and unloaded freight for more years than I care to admit so I'm not a lazy person. If you enjoy having to document each and every move you make every day and working like a lumper for a fraction of the pay, having someone tell you what time you may have your lunch or take a quick break, and love endless rule and regulations this is your job. Nothing personal here just my honest opinion.
