There all lazy I know. Let me example back in 2011 I was a warehouse supervisor we were a small operation bobtail trucks that had to loaded by hand etc then 3 tines a week have a couple 53 ft trucks come and wait get loaded etc. Most of my crew I had didn't even know how to read yes they couldn't read so made things difficult when sorting getting things ready for the trailers, me by myself I can load a whole 53ft trailer in under 20 mins that's me goin through rows pulling down pallets weighting them stacking then putting in the trailers. Rest of the crew just stand around doing nothing they don't care there getting paid by the hour to drag there feet.

I believe the way to have most shippers etc to become faster is to have it become piecework each trailer that gets done they get paid a certain amount

Lets see, most pallets are 4 × 4..most common pallets hold 2 to 3 thousand pounds, and most 53s put on 20 to 22 pallets for a 45,000 to 48,000 tare load.even if all the pallets were stacked in a row 6 feet from your trl doors you couldn't load a 53 in under 20 minutes.that would be less than a minute per pallet...Fuzzy math...nope not bying it ..Maybe 40 ...

Warehouse already is pre sorted and then pallets are stacked in rows ready to go. So yes it can be done. And yes most pallets were double stacked for most material had melon boxes for books etc so it can we done. Case in point I became the lead forklifter and supervisor within 3 months of employment since I can sort move etc fast. I could unload a whole trailer and sort at the same time in 30 since I ran most of logistics paperwork knew what needed to be where what needed to pull really simple to load trailers when you have a good routine only time trailers get loaded slow is when the pallets arent wrapped right pallet broken etc

Also forklift had 10 thousand part for the forks the forks could rotate 360 degrees so could fix any problem that arises even tilted pallets that normal forklift can't grab since there forks can't tilt at 45 60 etc angles

I can't remember if it was Fedex or UPS but one of them started to pay their sort and loading crews by piece work and they were able to get their shipments out the door before cutoff where before they were always late. It would help in shipping and receiving business but I don't see it practical on a large scale due to lack of tracking in many operations and the range of products that might be handled.

I have heard stories (I don't know if they are true but I want to believe it) that the garbage workers that work the city here work there butt off for the morning to complete their route and get to sit in the break room and watch tv for the rest of hte day because they are paid for the whole day. I don't think it is wrong because I don't see many trucks driving after lunch. It would be nice if they would cut down on the number of drivers and increase the route length but that is a different topic.

Wasn't UPS, unless it was kept to a few terminals. UPS has been hourly forevah and with the union behind the dock hands I doubt that will be changing anytime soon.

As to the OP, ya that's one reason. Another is crappy planning on the shipping department. Or a late incoming load. Or someone loaded the wrong trailer. Or the production line broke down so the product wasn't finished before you got there. Or or or or or....

There's hundreds of reasons why drivers get detained. We don't really care why we have to sit there. The reason why isn't what's costing us money. Only thing we care about is HOW LONG.

Again just reinforces the fact that the FMCSA needs to address and provide a realistic remedy or solution when our hours are drained while at a shipper or receiver. Most drivers still on paper can take a "Line 5" and deal with it (As long as it's not excessive)

Those of us on E Logs don't have that option and dread getting an HOS violation if we so much as move the truck a couple of feet in any direction, because the shipper or receiver has a policy of getting drivers off the property once they've finished because you're not allowed to take your 10 on their premise.

The last thing these places are concerned about it seems is how their efficiency (Or lack there of) affects us and our CSA scores.

You are 100% correct. However the FMCSA and/or Congress won't touch this issue. The shippers carry more weight in Washington than our industry and the big carriers don't have the stomach to push matters and poke a stick in the shippers even if they could. I don't see anyone doing a thing other than forcing us to "deal with it" and then take a beating at a roadside inspection or an audit when an HOS violation is found.

When I was on elogs and that happened to me, I just drove until I could find safe parking. Then sent safety a message explaining why I had to do what I did. Never got more than an "OK" from them. Love being back on loose-leaf now, but I'm sure eventually everyone will be on elogs.
