I've made a committment to provide an engine and parts for somebody to rebuild for a college project this fall. I'd like to build a stout 3406E. By stout I mean in the neighborhood of 2000 lbs/ft @ 1400-1500 rpms (around 700hp at 1800rpms) and hopefully something resembling decent mileage when I'm not on it. I pull tanker in the ND oilfield so while we don't have long pulls, some hills are pretty hard pulls for short distance so having a responsive engine that builds boost/power quickly is ideal imo. Aside from idling around on gravel roads, the engine would spend most of it's time at around 1450 rpms running down the road. I would also like this engine to be something that I can take to a cat mech if need be later without problems of it being something exotic.
Now - I have an engine ( 5EK18448 ) that I can use for this project, but I don't know if the block/crank is up to the project I have in mind. If it isn't, what should i be looking for? If it is, does anyone have an engine SN I should mimic or cam/injector/turbo etc.. combo to get what I'm looking for?

This engine came out of a Volvo and was rated at 375 Hp when it left the factory.
You'll have to replace the cylinder packs with steel top pistons and change the oil jets in the block for the steel piston crowns.
You'll have to change the camshaft to a 800 Hp marine camshaft 130-9710 or a 5EK stock cam 187-9381
You'll have to change injectors to 211-3024 which are a stock flow rate for a 5EK 550Hp injector.
some ECM tweaks and a turbo and 700 Hp is very easy to build with these parts.Sixamskier Thanks this. -
Outstanding! Thank you very much Mr Haney. I do have a couple questions to follow up though:
1. Is there a turbo PN you recommend for my build?
2. What if any difference would be expected between the two camshafts you recommended?
3. Would you be interested in doing the ECM? My timeframe would be sometime this fall as mentioned earlier in my post. -
1)I'll build you a BW turbo that is capable of handling 725 Hp.
2) The marine cam will give you a 50 Hp gain above the stock 5EK cam
3)Yes, whenever you're ready and it fits your schedule -
I'm about to build a 1LW with about the same goals in mind, and I need some ECM tuning and advice on parts selection. It seems that Mr. Haney is the man to talk to!

I sent you a PM
I've been known to dabble slightly in modifying these engines
