the cause for 99.99% of all tire blow outs are from not having the proper PSI in them. over loading the rating. it does not matter if it is a recap or new tire.

He asked if you can because he's getting ready to take his test, he didn't ask if it was a good idea. While being a horrible idea, I don't believe it's illegal to run retreads on the steer axle of a truck. I saw one regulation referencing regrooved tires, but I can't find anything about retreads.
bstrong3 Thanks this. -
I was always under the impression that it is illegal to put recaps on the tractor steer axle. In all honesty I'd never even consider running caps period. They are cheap for a reason. My dad ran a set on one of his log trucks and they started seperating and coming apart less than 3 months later. Back to new tires after that and he never had an issue with tires coming apart since.

If asked, tell the examiner that running recaps on the steer axle is against your own moral laws. And with regards to public safety and that of your own, a recap shall never be used as a steer.

Just a question? I am not either for or against recaps. Just want some one to show where in the FMCSA Book where it says thou shall not use retreads on the steers. Just would like clarification because I can not find it and am beginning to think this is a myth to the truckers proportions of US Marshals levels. This is the only thing I can find http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.75
Long FLD Thanks this. -
Never ever run a recap on steers. Those are the tires that your life, and other lives depend on the most.
