The passage of time helps a lot. The average person just wants to see a history of learning from past mistakes and for the person to walk the straight and narrow. To that end, people can be very forgiving. I won't list the things I will not forgive, but I generally won't hold a mistake made in youth against someone today 30 or more years later. My first NCOIC (Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge)I served under once I got to my first duty station was a convicted felon. He actually shot a man near New York City in the 50s and went on to be in and out of juvenile facilities and then later as an adult. A NY judge gave him an option the service or Prison. He chose the service and enlisted in the Air Force. I served under this man for almost 18 months until he retired in 1977. One of the finest men I have had the pleasure to have known and I when I discovered he died in the late 90s I cried. People can change, but ALL of us are prisoners to our past!
