I wish there was a list of things to pay attention to, like a maintaining your truck for dummies kind of a thing. I don't come from a trucking family and I don't know any owner operators, at least not any successful ones. So it's sort of a trial and error situation for me. Expensive way to learn. But I've been lucky so far...

    Actually there is....

It's the same stuff you studied while getting your CDL and was required to "point/touch/call-out" before the actual driving test. In other words, pre-trip/post-trip.

Keep an eye to those items, and all others will fall into place.

Well, I know about those basic things. What I'm more worried about is obscure little filters and things that need to be replaced that TA doesn't touch or tell me about when I'm doing my oil changes. Def filter, EGR filter that's kind of stuff. And this truck didn't even come with the Freightliner manual. Should have stolen the one from my old company truck.

    Yes, there are filters for:
Power steering pumps, some engines have coolant filters, DEF fluid filter, DEF doser inlet screen, transmission inlet air filter, some forward differentials have a filter, the a/c has a desiccant filter.
The wheel bearings should be checked/tightened every 200,000 miles.
Most owners maintenance manuals have schedule to follow that is pretty extensive.

Thanks, man. I'm going to copy and paste this list and bother TA with it next time I'm doing my oil change.

I suggest you do your own oil changes and grease jobs.
OR at least get on your back under your truck once a week.
Look for play in the u joints. Any air lines rubbing. Anything out of place or loose.

Rusty trails around bolt heads or nuts is a sign they are loose.

If you can find a mechanic/shop you can trust a have most of your work done.
They should be able to help you with
    Keeping up routine maintenance.
You might find a manual in this website.
ManualsLib - Makes it easy to find manuals online!

    So far good job.
    Good luck
