I was down in the lower 48 last month and we stopped in at the local Pilot in San Antonio. We went in the truck lanes to fuel the truck and next to us was a 3/4 ton P//U with a aux tank in the rear bed. The driver fueled up his truck then switched off the pump and fueled up the aux tank. I made the little remark to him and said going for the cheep stuff.... he said yep.
I did not think that was legal to do ? but then again with the high cost of fuel ????? man got to make a living.
Reefer fuel in a P/U ????

did he put the reefer fuel in the truck or in the jockey tank ?
he could be using it on his farm which is perfectely legal--but if he is burning it in the truck--i wouldnt want to be caught with it---chances are he wouldnt be caught--but you never know -

Nothing wrong with putting off road fuel in an auxiliary tank. If one uses it on road it can be very costly like a $10,000 fine depending on the state. On top of that the IRS will come after you for cheating as well!
I've seen DOT sticking regular ol' pickup truck tanks at farm/logging shows and auctions in WI. I heard that if a driver has a company truck and gets caught both the driver and the company get a huge fine but not sure if that part is true. It is true it's not worth getting caught using it on road either way though!
Lots of pumps at gas stations that do not serve heavy trucks sell it here -
Alot of them guys have a backhoe or other offroad equipment and it's perfectly legal.

Besides would be kinda tough to check fuel(although not impossible)in a P/U--not like your gonna easily dip the tanks--
but my biggest question to y'all out here is? How many times since they have been dying fuel-(if you have been out here that long)-have you been checked?
It has happened to me a grand total of TWICE in the entire time I have been out here and they were 12 years apart--and hasn't happened in the last 6

at Pilot, u can't get tax-exempt farm fuel in the truck lanes... when he switched the pump off and then back on it switched to reefer fuel status which is the exact same fuel he pumped into his truck but doesn't include the highway use taxes... reefer fuel isn't taxed like highway fuel, that's why you switch the pump off then back on, to change the taxes... it's the same fuel, it's not red farm fuel as your thinking, and if he's filling an aux tank then it's legal until he pumps it into his truck tank.

The red dye is mixed into the diesel at the fuel rack (the tank farm where the fuel trucks fill their delivery tanks)...and is exclusively for farm/ag use. The red fuel is not delivered to the truck stops but delivered directly to the farm/ag business...there wold be no way to dye fuel at a truck stop.

I know of a guy that runs an auxiliary diesel tank in his 1 ton diesel pickup, full of red diesel. His pickup tank is full of highway diesel. It has been for a long, long time. He has his auxiliary tank plumbed into his pickup and burns the red diesel all day long. But for fuel checks, which are pretty common in CA, he passes with flying colors (or no color, to be precise!) when they dip his standard fuel tank.
outerspacehillbilly Thanks this. -
Just to clarify, red dyed fuel is the good old high sulphur fuel as far as i know...
