I was stopped and checked for off road fuel, red or in canada it can also be purple, in nebraska and kansas last week. both times were state troopers doing the checking. also was checked in wyoming on the way back north. maybe was a blitz on it?

I'm not sure about in the United States, but in Canada it is lsd with the dye added as the delivery truck loads it at the rack.

In the states red dye is off road diesel. Some loading racks will inject it and some you have to add the pills. I've seen IRS set up right outside our tank farm and stop and check all the gasoline haulers to make sure they were not using off road diesel. It's a big fine because it deals with road use tax.

Here in Alberta I have loaded at Esso & Shell & both use a dye that is added automatically as I'm loading the trailer. But my point was (is) that its Low Sulfur Diesel not regular High Sulfur. And yes its used for off road.

When did it stop being high-sulphur? I thought that was the idea...

Reefer fuel is the same price as road fuel. The system keeps track of it and you get a statement later showing the gallons of each, so you can figure your road tax easily.
that is, as long as it's coming from the same pump...

Actually some of the small truck stops still sell discount reefer fuel and have single lone pump for it and it is dyed.

    STOP!!!

RED fuel USED to be treated fuel that Flying J and a few other stops sold as the RED was part of the additive until the ICC highway Administration at the time decided that they could not dip a tank and tell if the drivers were using off road fuel as road fuel because the colors of dye they used to "mark" off road untaxed fuel.
    \
Remember you used to be able to buy an additive called RED? Not any more! In fact no fuel additive is any color but yellow/straw for a reason

Red fuel covered the blue or green color used so they made it a no no to sell any as a road fuel. When you get dipped by the state the first thing they see is if that fuel is a straw color. Any other color then that "dip" is bottled and sent in with your truck vin, tag and company name and you get a receipt that looks like a ticket so you can get fined some wonderful tax for driving on the road with untaxed fuel.

NOW. A pick up truck a Volkswagen Jetta, Mercedes Benz and anything else with a diesel engine that is NOT used in commerce or is a "commercial" vehicle does not have to pay those road use taxes we all are familiar with!

They can run off road fuel for a reason.

If they pay for road use fuel, if they have half a brain in their head they will keep their receipts and file them when they do their taxes. If they drive a lot and spend a lot then all those taxes they paid at the pump comes back at the end of the year in their return! You think per diem is nice, for a person driving a diesel it's not as much but that is a nice big screen they can get!

If they can buy from the off road pump that is just a receipt they will not have to keep as they didn't pay the road use tax that truck have to pay.

Some states like CO give you a form to fill out or they used to if you buy diesel and you get the discount at the counter. I had to fill a few of them out when I drove my dads Mercedes there a few years ago.
