I live in Indy, its been a big story lately about reefers not running or operating correctly. It will be the flavor of the month and then they will leave us alone and move on to something else soon enough.

Most of my driving I pulled reefers. The only thing DOT cares about was mentioned above. If it's leaking oil or won't pass an inspection that's about all they care about. Even the AG inspection stations only care about paperwork and sealed doors and what the product was.
I haven't seen the news story about "bad" meat on trucks and the DOT doing something about it.
As to leaking juice. Ok, because that might be a "wet" load or a load that had ice thrown on top which doesn't happen that much any more due to increases in the quality of the units and ice was a big side business of the reefer life that's dying a fast life as ice just isn't the thing any more.
Yes, as it melted and you came up behind a reefer peeing on the road you either passed his arse or backed off. But DOT very seldom stopped a unit with something pouring out of the corner drain holes. They knew they didn't want it on their car or shoes and would pretty much give them a quick glance and pass them on. Chicken was one of the biggest buyers of ice as was produce but meat not so much.
I was glad when they stopped blowing ice into a new trailer! It always seemed to add to the gross weight and would always make the truck to heavy. Guaranteed a scale bypass load! -
This is why I pull tankers..... "whats that Mr. Officer, you way to look into my tank full of caustic acid???....didn't think so" LOL

You sure jumped to a quick defense. They all say they weren't following too close. -
I hauled fresh seafood for many years, and we ALWAYS had ice in the boxes with a combination of water and fish juice pissing out from the drain holes. people got mad all the time, but thats what the drain holes are for.

As for the defense, I am learning to anticipate "attacks" on here... guess I got a little trigger-happy -

I haul eggs with a reefer. If the car behind me has it's wipers going on a sunny day, I know I have a problem!
THBatMan8 Thanks this. -

The chicken yards do have trenches they park over to catch the juice. But usually it's a slow drip coming out. Not enough to mess up a car going down the road but a speck or two.
Wash outs, you'll think a drum flipped over or something. When I was green, like a dummy I told a reefer driver he was leaking something. Little did I know he had a wash out.
moderndrifter Thanks this.
