I haven't driven for over 5 yrs., I have kept my CDL and Medical card current with all endorsements including hazmat up to date. Have experience with reefers, vans and doubles. I'd like to get back on the road...does anyone know who has a simple refresher course so I don't have to surrender my current CDL and spend 3 wks. in someone's school? Or maybe an O/O who would need a teamer in his rig?

Hi scorps7. Off the top of my head, I know that Averitt does with a 5 year gap. I was told by Prime that they do. Heartland does refresher but the biggest lapse you can have with them is 3 yrs. Hope thius helps.

Thank you 3fingers, I am finding this subject way over worked here on this forum, no one really seems to know what's up with drivers who want to get back after some time down. I have found a lot of options available to me get to my end and paying a truck training school is not the way I would take...way too much money for no guarantees. If you don't retrain or whatever in your own state you surrender your current CDL, all endorsements and Med card when you go somewhere else to update. Now why would anyone want to do that? It is a complex subject and there are, I have discovered, many creative ways to reach your goal. Just keep hunting and don't give up, and thank you to all the people that have tried to answer this same question for everyone who has asked the same question.

I just had the same issue! Been out for 5 years! I looked for smaller companies, that took on students and applied there. I just had a road test yesterday and they offered me the job. I am suprised that did not want me to take a refresher course. My shifting is a little rough but I did do ALOT of research and brushed up on my basic skill knowledge. YouTube has a ton of videos and you will be suprised how much it helps. The company is going to put me with a trainer for a week and of course I will start at the lowest Cents per mile, but I am thrilled. I will be the ONLY lady driver they have and they already mentioned me becoming a trainer. (I don't know about that as I am predjudice against lady drivers) LOL! I hope this gives you some Ideas in your search. Just remember to sell yourself but be down to earth when talking to them. These companies don't like whiners who complain about others companies they used to work for. Good luck!
