I hate to do it, but it may be the only way. I have about six months experience in Van and Refer, none of it considered recent. I've been out of a truck for the last 18 months. In this economy, everyone wants recent experience.
Does anyone know of schools that provide a refresher training and the costs? I sure don't want to spend 5K when I already have a CDL and if I pay for it will it actually make a difference for employment? Everyone talks about refresher courses, but I don't think I have ever seen anyone post information about them.

I think they all do. It's a little over half the cost of the full deal at my last school. $1900 was what they were charging. But the whole 4 weeks was $2950.

Where did you get your "Full Meal Deal"? I'd like a little better quality than the dollar menu......That was rude. Really, where did you receive your refresher training and how long was it? I e-mailed roadmaster earlier and questioned them, but I have yet to receive a reply. 1900 seems a bit steep when most schools only instruct you far enough to pass the State exam. Not sure what the full deal is or how many hours experience.

The way things are in this industry with few jobs and low pay,...Why even try to get back in???

Wallaye. The only reason I left the road was because of issues with teen-agers/young adults at home. That problem is solved, thanks to the US Army, and I truly enjoyed trucking. Even the bad times.
No-Tarps. I think I talked to you on another board. Many companies, not just Maverick have instituted hiring freezes. Most will hire new drivers right out of school, but not one without recent experience. Doesn't make sense to me, but that's the way it is.
The reason I posted this was for information about refresher courses and their subtance/costs. I read a few posts where people with 5 plus years of experience are required to take refresher courses, but I have no clue about them becuase most schools only teach you enough to pass the state exam. Trying to find out a little more. -
I'm not sure how you read my answer, but I'm pretty sure nothing about it was rude. To clarify, the refresher course is a about half the cost of the regular course at whatever school you attend. If they charge more than my school, the refresher will also be more. -
PharmPhail. I was refering to my response to your post. You were not rude. I was.
What school did you receive your refresher course from and how long were you out of the industry? -
OH! My bad. Ok, no I didn't actually do the refresher. I was there getting my first CDL. I just happen to know what they were charging for the refresher and some were there doing it. I went to Charlotte Truck Driver Training School.
They said all the hours were cut in half, so you'd do 25 hours class, 25 field, 20 observation, and 10 driving, a few of which would be night drive hours. -
try googling it. throw something like: cdl refresher course your city state and see what pops up. that can usually get you started in the direction for what your looking for.
