I am a recent CDL graduate and I am trying to make a decision on the best company to start with and what kind of driving I want to do. I need to be home as much as possible but I need to make as much money as possible. I live in Chicago, I got offers from Schneider Intermodal but the pay is too low. I got an offer from Werner for a family dollar account but after finding out that I have to unload the truck (I'm 57 :)) I don't think I want to do that. I applied for a regional position with Averitt and I was thinking since they have a terminal here I might be able to get home more often, they also advertise the they regional positions are 90% no touch. Don't know what company to go with but I don't want to make a decision that I will regret.

Any advice on any good companies in the Chicago area. Thanks.

Go with a tanker company if you don't want to touch any freight. Pay is usually a little better too. Or get on with a trash hauler. That will get you home everyday. Lots of options in Chicago. Just pick something and get your 6 months of clean driving. Then you will have no problem getting in a daycab and be home daily.

Schneider may have some drop & hook accounts. I think they have a jobs page on their website. Some accounts may say "experience required" so ignore that and apply anyway.
Schneider Bulk is the tanker division; this can lead to many high paying jobs in the future. Do you have hazmat/tanker endorsements?
FFE (Frozen Food Express) has a terminal in Chicago and may have something you'd be interested in. They hire new grads and even have their own cdl school. They have different routes such as truckload and LTL, etc.

Here's some tanker companies that hire new cdl grads:
Trimac Transportation - hire new grads on a case by case basis.
    Tidewater Transit
    Superior-Carriers - super good reputation
    CTL Transportation
    SVTN

^^^^ Agree totally. I'm home daily and off weekends with my tanker gig (small fleet) and the pay is rather decent. No-touch (who wants to touch hot asphalt, anyway?) but for pumping on and off... a few hoses and a PTO. And as nb said, and China as well, you got some good pickins in CHI ~! (or ORD as some call it, LoL!!)

    Best of luck~!
