i was rejected from roadmaster trucking school and ait in fontana ca. i have a misdemeanor from 12 years ago and i have a domestic violence from 2 years ago. Their reasoning is that my misdemeanor conviction for domestic violence is less than 5 years old. Has anyone heard of this? If i get my cdl somewhere else is it possible that I can get a job with a large carrier otr? this totally deflated me and my hopes of trucking someone lift my spirits again please!

Would you rather have them lie and say "no problem" and charge $4 grand? Then find out no one will hire you?
They did right by you, as for a job start writeing letters and emails explain IN DETAIL your problem and ask for a prehire letter. If you get some SAVE THEM and then go to the school.
Be prepared for a lot of "sorry we can't use you" BOLwr2001 Thanks this. -
tuition is actually 19,000 for a "professional" truck driver course which includes all certs. Which i am wiling to pay but I dunno I guess I am frustrated...I

For 19 grand they ought to go out and find a job for you. Yes they did you a favor. Like was said go ask around to see if it is even feasible to get hired on after going to school. Good luck.

Well with the 19k they give you applications to get hired right away otr and they really really push Swift and Werner applications. Ima start applying directly to see if i can get someone thats interested. Thanks!

I'm calling BS on this 19k for driving school. Swift has their own school in Phoenix, that you could attend for a lot less. I would call Swift directly and hear what they have to tell you.

okay im starting to feel discriminated. Is there any kind of policy out there that would bar me from driving with misdemeanors? the school finances 14k and the 5k are paid with financial aid I dont think they are allowed to discriminate like that if they receive public funds for tuition??? The excuses i got were "the carriers we work with will def. reject you because your misdemeanor is less than 5 years" and "canadian authorities are very selective about who they let in, if you have a load to canada and they dont let you in the carrier will have a big problem" also "i know your probation ends in a year but that means nothing to the carriers because they have their standards". my explanations to that were "i just want my cdl i dont necesarily want to work with your carriers", "i hate french canada so i'd like to stick with a carrier that only does the local 48 states", "my probation is informal I can travel out of state and out of the country without restrictions". The sales girl just said "if you want your cdl really bad then go down the street where they charge 500 and you wil never get a job after you have your cdl. other than that you have to wait 5 years theres nothing else i can do for you". Ugh! its ridiculous but im guessing its some kind of sign to stay away now.

they are definitely discriminating against you, but I can see why they would. You might find a place that wants you to work for them.
Maybe start working somewhere that has drivers and they can help you get driving after working for them awhile. -
Find a small company, they will hire you without experience, or work in the yard as a spotter. DONE again. $19K, only a knucklehead would pay that. Good Luck
Forgot one thing, If the company has a woman dispatcher, dont apply.Jarhed1964, Onetruckpony and CenutryClass Thank this. -
Onetruckpony Thanks this.
