as mentioned. once the N14 gets to 500hp and up they have a pot of issues. its a great motor at 460.
trust me those head bolts get expensive fast. took me a while buying them at cummins price before i found the cheap ones at truck pro.

As for reliability, there is not one engine that you can beat the snot out of and not break. Pulling 144,000 lbs over mountains is not like running 80k here in the US. You are comparing apples to oranges. This reminds me of the movie Warhorse, where they would beat horses to bring the heavy artillery to the top of a hill. Did you see how many died doing that intense work! Your experiences with Cummins are a little skewed in that sense. It has been rock solid for us who drive these trucks day in and day out. We are also religious about maintenance including changing the crankshaft dampers. Deferred maintenance will come back and bite you in the butt big time when least expected and run big buck$$$$$. -

I have built and tested at least 100 N14 engines and never once saw a head bolt guage in a head set, everyone I know who works on Cummins keep a stretch guage in their tool chest because it's not included in the head set.

On second thought, why don't you prove that what you are saying is true by posting a valid part number for one of these gaskets. I have never seen or heard of a 550hp N14, here in the us the max. EPA rated is 525hp. and in Europe there is the EU530, same as the EPA 500 Celect but with faster timing and a Celect Plus ECM. Do you even know what EGR stands for or what it is?
