I previously posted with questions of interest in joining the trucking industry. However, due to family problems I had to postpone that dream, everything is great now and I would like to get started. I previously contacted Prime, Millis Transfer, Stevens, and Swift, however, I only received the greenlight from Stevens and Swift. Im more inclinced to go with them as their Memphis terminal is only a few miles from me, and I would also be able to do my training in Millington, however, they don't have APU's and I have seen my share of Swift bashing here. I have an acquaintance who drove for Stevens and he hated it, he never got hometime, and when he did, couldn't bring his truck home.
I'm looking for a company that offers training, and decent pay. I know I won't get rich and will have to pay dues in my first year and are willing to do so. However, I would like a company that at least allows me to get home and offers decent pay. I'm working in a car manufacturing plant now, and make about $320 a week, so trucking would be a leap from where I am (I hope). Could anybody offer any other companies or advice that I could look into, any help would be appreciated.

Well I can tell you about the only company thats lower than swift is england. You're in AL have you considered flat beddinf at all? Its prime flatbed country down there.
Also you may want to rethink this company training thing, make sure you know everything about what you're getting into with a. Company sponsored school as opposed to training elsewhere and then finding a job. It doesn't limit your options as much. Going to a company sponsored school can. Its all things to think about.
Glad to hear things have straightened up for you, good luck with everything hope it all works out for you.JPearson Thanks this. -
Swift isn't a bad company; it's just very large, so there will be complainers.
I'd push for Millis though; contact them again.
Try Southern Refrigerated Transport; school in Texarkana with furnished hotel room, bus ticket, 3 meals a day.
Prime is ok except for the long training period. Their flatbed and tanker division looks best.
Midwest-Coast Transport, based in Florida runs lots of refrigerated freight in and out of Florida which would put you through Alabama on a regular basis. You can apply for their school on Comcar website.DriverToBroker and JPearson Thank this. -
Hi Chinatown, was waiting on your wealth of knowledge to swing though
. I was hoping to get on a Swift dedicated account, my current job is right next to a Walmart DC and I see hundreds of Swift trucks in and out daily. I looked on the Southern Transport site and it says you have to be 23 with 8 months OTR experience, I just turned 22 yesterday and don't have any experience.
Prime- I contacted them first, however, I was turned down, although I'm going to push harder for them and also Millis. I think my employment background caused problems with them. Hopefully, I can get that overlooked. -
I'm not opposed to flat bedding, I just haven't really given it much thought. I'm 22, and in great shape so it wouldn't be too tough for me physically. I have looked into classes at the local community college, however, I'm looking to get started right away. I would love to drive locally or regionally, and I know other training would be ideal in helping me find a job like that. I'm just very confused as to which route to take lol, however, I know that I am ready to get started. I've done months of research and know that this is what I want. Also, thanks alot for the well-wishes! Stay safe brother! (Nice truck btw, looks like it hauls ###!)

You should be able to get on the Swift account at Walmart DC. That's gravy work there. Contact Swift and tell them you want that account.
Also keep pushing for Millis, those drivers make good money.JPearson Thanks this. -
Stay in the auto plant....that $320 a week will look good to you after 2 months on the roadx#1 Thanks this.

I think lepton and wolfyinc..are on dedicated swift accounts...send them a pm....both are nice guys and would give you some insite...
JPearson Thanks this. -
if you absolutely must enter trucking,do so after going to a state run cdl mill.NEVER,i mean NEVER enter via a company run cdl mill.you will be an indentured servant for what will seem as if it is an eternity.I am thinking that our Great state of Alabama has state run schools.start checking into them and save your money and time.

At his current poverty income the Feds will likely pay for his schooling through a vocational school.
