QC requires Haz-Mat and TWIC so I have them, it's just another cost of operation to keep my dedicated run (tho I use neither on it)but I feel as G/Man said, it's just another racket for the politicians to dip their fat greedy fingers deeper into our pockets to pay for all their luxiouries they have (I know I spelled that worng LOL)

Before someone came up with the bright idea of the latest safety, security scam, those who needed to check us out could do it very easily by running our license and/or social security number. I still go to military facilities where they will run my license and social security number. That is all they need. In fact, it is all they ever needed. I read something a few months ago that someone has come up with yet another "National ID" card that they want to promote. I would just as soon we go back to the old chauffeaurs license. I can't see paying extra money for all the extra cards. None seem to give the government as much information on us as they want. I don't see a reason why the government needs to have all this information on us anyway. Unless someone is hauling high security products or top secret loads then I don't see why we need to have any additional background checks.

And honestly why would they need to out-source those Top Secret loads and High Security stuff and such, why wouldn't they haul the stuff themselves as there are quite a few military personel from what I see.

Guys one good thing is. Paying for background checks is tax deductable as long as your company doesn't pay for it. That is why some companies pay for it. Condo Crusier I have to disagree with you about hazmat being a waste of time for a company driver. While a company driver may haul 1 or 2 hazmat loads a year it beats sitting for an extra day or two in the middle of nowhere because the only load available is a hazmat load. Also Hazmat loads as a rule pays more. What I don't understand is if a driver has Hazmat why should he/she have to get a TWIC Card. The background check is basically the same. My thinking is a terrorist can do more damage with a hazmat load than going into a port to pick up a load of bananas or pineapples.

That is an interesting question. Sometimes it is easier to hide in plain sight. It is usually easy to spot military personnel. Some things are transported by the military. I think at one time there were probably more sensitive loads hauled by those still in the military than by private contractors. It may be that it is less expensive to use outside contractors than tie up your best people with transport. There could be a number of reasons why the military use outside contractors for moving certain types of freight.

Here in Tennessee, the written test is now on computers, it is mandatory to ensure that your skills are up to spec. Then once you pass that then you go and get Background check and fingerprinted. they send you a letter in the mail withing 2 weeks i had mine. providing proof that you hae passed background and are certified to Haul it.

Many people aren't aware a hazmat endorsement and background check do NOT qualify you to haul hazmat . You must also take periodic certified training and carry the certification card . http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr_2010/octqtr/pdf/49cfr172.702.pdf

The license allows you to carry it down the road and the ERG is a vague guide to an ID and a response. The carrier must also certify you under HM-181 which is a film and a q/a however mine has not and in all my years with a tank, my 181 was never checked. There's another one I've had also but I don't rem. the number. These what you mean?

I'm not sure they are required anymore......

I mean training is required covering all the items covered in the link in my above post . Drivers are given a card which must be renewed every 3 years . I have been asked for the certification card during inspection .
This is an example of offered courses . http://www.mastery.com/productpage.php?product_id=smaxdota
