Can I rent a class A truck for the DMV road test? I have my CDL-A permit but don't know anyone that's willing to lend me a truck. I have 160 hours of training under my belt. I am in Minot, ND.

you would need to have someone WITH a CDL-A available to do the actual rental.

when you looking to do this?

OK, here are some ball park figures on (if it were even allowable) to rent a tractor and trailer from a leasing company:

Daily rental for tractor 172.74, per day plus .19 per mile, - with a $5000 pre-approved credit line, and a business with 3 years financials.

the trailer 36.19 per day plus 0.04 per mile and a $500, deposit. The trailer can be rented without a pre-approved credit account.

So I added the mileage up at 40 miles.. just as a ballpark figure for running from the lease location to where it is that you plan on training for this day and I'll say 10 Gallons for the day for fuel.

Truck and trailer = $ 208.93 / Mileage $9.20 / Diesel appx $40.00 so about $250 dollars a day to train in and test in a truck that you have never even laid eyes on. Your chances of success in passing the skills test in this manner is frankly, not that high and as you'd have to get a CDL driver and or company with all the financial requirements, it just wouldn't work..

These are just estimates but the requirements are spot on..

Holy crap, someone from MN. Thank goodness. I'm looking to get my CDL-A license as soon as possible. I took my road test yesterday (with my truck driving school's truck) and was 30 minutes from passing and getting my CDL-A license. I did everything perfectly well and aced the pre-trip test (all items checked) and backing test (no pullups), it's just that there was a hill that was hiding a speeding car coming my way when I was making a right turn on the driving test. The mere fact that the speeding car had to stop to let me clear my turn means that the tester failed my test. Other than that, I would've aced the road test no problem too.

My truck driving school won't give me a second chance to use their truck though.

your BEST bet might be to chalk this up as a failure (meaning the whole school experience) and call companies that offer free tuition cdl training, and start over. i dont often encourage someone to go the company training route, but you said you are living in your car. first company id call is millis. they offer cdl training for free with a 1 year contractual obligation upon graduating. they will charge you $25 per week out of your pay for that year, for a total of $1300. i have no idea how long the training takes. there are other companies out there that offer something similar, this is just the best deal that ive heard of. two companies to avoid unless all else has been tried are cr england and crst. you dont want to leave your crooked scam school just to get on with a crooked scam company like those two.

he did a button hook that took him into the oncoming traffic lane...technically illegal. when the oncoming car came over the rise the tester told him to stop and failed him. i wouldve been forced to do the same, though i also might have been doing the same button hook that he did.

No it's not illegal to do a "button hook". Specifically in the ND Road manual, Fig 2-13, it says to do just what he describes.

It's either that or drop your trailer off the curb. Sometimes it's actually required to to it so you won't hit an obstacle or jump onto the curb/sidewalk.

Because you sure don't go whipping into the lane to your left to make a right turn. or even straddle two lanes from the road you are leaving.

What intersection did this occur at?

i wasnt trying to criticize...but its my understanding that impeding oncoming traffic is illegal. i could be wrong...certainly wouldnt be the first time. but thats what i was told. in reality, as you said, it is at times necessary to utilize the oncoming traffic's lane.
