Hi all,
Here's the situation. Got my CDL 3 years ago at a place that would barely qualify as a driving school. I think it cost me $500 to get 4 hours of training with an instructor (pre-trip and then three hours or so on the road), and then another $300 to rent a truck and take the test a week or so later (I passed on the 1st try.) The only way I was able to pass with so little training is that I had been pulling gooseneck trailers since I was 16, and did some straight truck driving for 4 years, and learned to drive with a manual tranny. So I picked it up very quickly. The school was set up for me to take as many 4 hour sessions as I needed to feel "comfortable" (at $500 a pop) before I took the road test. Most people would take 2 or 3 of these sessions before attempting to take a road test. But my main goal was to save $$$, because I only wanted my CDL for part-time or farm work, so I went for the road test after one session. (This is why $5,000 for a real driving school didn't make sense for me.) So I only took one 4-hour session of training and thankfully passed my first road test.
Here's the problem: It looks like I have a part-time driving job lined up for this spring hauling fertilizer to farmers. But I haven't been in a truck in three years, and my cheapo training only made me hook up/unhook a trailer one time. They didn't even make hook up or unhook for my road test, it was ready to go when I got there. I'm confident in my driving abilities for the most part, but I want to spend more time practicing some of the basics before I show up for my first day.
I tried to rent a tractor/trailer to spend a day practicing, but the rental place said they would only rent to businesses. I'm also guessing that most people aren't going to want to let me borrow a truck for "practice", probably for insurance reasons.
So am I basically screwed? It seems like my only option is to take a refresher course... which I don't want to spend the $$$ to do. OR... use the name of my dad's business to rent a truck and get around the "businesses only" rule. Any ideas or advice out there?
