I remember hearing in class that changing fuel filters in between regular intervals increases MPGs, but how true is this? Wouldn’t a bad fuel filter just stop working as the fuel level would rise too high in the filter casing?
On a second thought, it looks like there may be more than just one fuel filter, at least on a DD15 engine. Who knows what fuel filter it’s recommended to change in between regular intervals.
Replacing Fuel Filters Sooner Increases MPGs? How so?

When I replace fuel filters, my fuel mileage initially goes down a couple tenths
PE_T Thanks this. -
You just change them at regular intervals, unless they clog and truck is running really bad or you got bad fuel from truck stop.. I never heard anyone change them for better MPG.
You can get the FASS FUEL systems for better MPG but it works more on taking air out of the fuel it only work on the older pre emission truck I believePE_T Thanks this. -
Filters need changing once in a while. They collect gunk and other things not permitted into the engine.
Fresh filters will flow really well until they gunk up again. Then your engine cannot drink properly.
I don't ever have filters changed for mpg. The truck will give you what it will give you. The thing is the opposite. NEVER run dry out of fuel. And starve the filters. You might as well have to replace them.PE_T Thanks this. -
the filter on the block has 3 filters and change every pm .. the big glass filter I change when fuel level gets about half way up which takes 200000 miles or more
PE_T Thanks this. -
actually on sunny days black trucks or darker colors will get better mileage because the sun heats up the cab which lessons the resistance and improves air flow

I wouldn't say it increases fuel mileage but I don't mess around with trying to stretch out filter life or wait until pressure drops off a little bit. I run both Cat primary and secondary filters which have a very low micron rating and will plug easily which is why I change them out around every 8k miles. Cheaper than injector replacement and getting 6 good Cat remans is like hitting the lottery.
