Greetings all!
I've recently decided to begin a career in the trucking industry. My original plan was to go with Swift (had a buddy that worked for them) and enter their training academy, which will most likely be in Millington TN. if, of course they send me to the one closest to my home location.
I've done quite a bit of research about Swift, the academy, the orientation, mentoring, and the trucks themselves. However, I've recently been looking at Stevens Transport as well, and from the public information they release I have to say I like what I see. So my questions are:
What do you, the actual truckers on the road think of these two companies?
How will the "new driver" experience differ from one to the other?
How does the equipment rate from one to the other?
What about the difference in policy they don't readily list on the websites?
What should I really expect from each one during the training and mentoring process?
What are the current pay scales for each one after 1 year?
What can you tell me about either of them that, as a newbie, I wouldn't even have thought to ask about?
I think I have a pretty good game plan for when I am finally riding solo, but getting there by the most effective means available at this point is proving no easy task. I've dug through these forums and found lots of good advice and tips for saving money on the road, eating well, and generally living well while still getting the job done. I do have a wife and kid at home that are supportive of my plans and with some hard work and a fair degree of luck hopefully I can reshape their life back home for the better.
This forum has been invaluable already as a vast source of information, now as I sit here and stare at my CDL Permit, hopefully you guys can help me pick a place to call home that will last for the long haul.
Thanks in advance,
Michael

Although with Swift you get the advantage of seeing the ### end of a lot of trucks with all of them passing you.
I would be interested how the OP narrowed his choices to these two companies.mje Thanks this. -
I drove for Swift back in 2004/5. They gave me a brand new Volvo (25,000 miles) after spending 8 weeks with a trainer. The biggest problem I had with them was getting my truck serviced. My home terminal was in Syracuse, NY, but, I rarely went up there. In six months, I think I was there twice. Compared to the Freightliner that my trainer had, the Volvo seemed under powered comparatively. Aside from that, I had no complaints about working for them. They got me home regularly and I rarely had to sit around waiting for a load. I cannot speak for their CDL training course, however. Overall, if I did OTR again, I'd consider driving for them again.
A friend of mine went with Stevens last year. It was his first OTR job. He ended up quitting because of the BS they put him through. His truck always broke down. He had to front money for hotel rooms while his truck was being serviced and they were slow with reimbursements. A 30 day training program that he had to take with them ended up lasting nearly 3 months. For a company as large as they are, it really sounded like they didn't have their act together.Kaos-OTR Thanks this. -
I just completed the Swift training program, and so far I'm pleased with the experience. I can't comment on the company otherwise as I'm not out with a mentor yet. I looked into Stevens and (surprisingly) found more complaints about them than Swift. Remember, Swift is the biggest one out there, so by purely a numbers game there will always be tons of complaints in comparison to other companies.

I've worked for both and I would run from Stevens as fast as you can, you'll get treated better at Swift.
If you don't mind going home once every three months, pick Stevens.Kaos-OTR Thanks this. -

Believe it or not, but a major percentage of drivers working for Swift are not Newbies, most of them have been driving for other companies before and have over 10-20 years experience, and No, I am not a Recruiter.
