I am running midwest regional and was told as well as it was in the job description that it was 5 on and 2 off. The off days on the weekend. Yes I realize it will be a 34 hour restart. Just talking to my dbl last week he kind of hinted that I could be home on a saturday or sunday or even monday, possibly staying out longer than the 5 days. That was one of the reasons I applied for this particular position. I have talked to other drivers and it seems there dbl's will try and keep them out longer. I am in a different situation where I don't need a lot of miles because I have a pension coming in from another job that I had. Being new I don't want to create waves but do I stick to my guns or suck it up and do as they wish until I get a little more time on?

Stick to your guns. They will push you to see if they can get over on you.

Instead of drawing a line in the sand and saying IF I DON'T MY WAY, I'M GONNA QUIT..(or something like that)..
Why not talk through the problem and realize that this is a job..Job's are a working relationship that require compromise from the employee and employer. The employer has customers to serve. Without those customers YOU don't have a job. If they need you to stay out an extra day or two to every once in awhile, do it. I'm sure there will come a time that YOU will need an extra day or two off and they will make every attempt to accomodate you.
Understanding that truck drivers work irregular hours, multiple days, holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and weekends was/is one of the hardest lessons I learned my first few years of trucking..
Good luck, and keep your job! They're are getting harder and harder to come by.Boogers Thanks this. -
this is the best info your gonna get like he said work things out be flexable and they will return the favor when you need it, DONT LEAVE JUST BECAUSE THEY WONT CHANGE FOR YOU, this is a random job you cant always be home on time, thats why you always plan for the unexpected, dont give up and welcome to the pumkin patch

Yep, its a give and take relationship. Scratch his back and he will scratch yours in return.

Well you say your DBL is hinting at it, So it sounds like he is feeling you out and open to negotiation. This is trucking regardless of what you were hired to do it requires some flexibility. I would either go see him in person or call him on the phone if your willing to be flexible, Tell him what position you were hired for and why you don't need a lot of miles, but that you understand that freight has got to be moved and your willing to help out provided it's NOT an every week thing and if he is willing to help you out with extra time off when needed in exchange then it's a win -win situation. I ran dedicated my DBL called me while on home time needed me to bail him out on a couple of loads it worked out good for both of us.

You gotta do whats right for you.Yes,it is give and take, but make sure its equal give and take.In the end its you spending all the time in the truck gone, not anyone here.
Dbl's will see how much they can get out of you,and if your the guy they can lean on if needed.
If you agreed, and hired on to something they aint doing, tell them.
I personally dont subscribe to the "Oh lawd, jobs is slim pickins" mentality.
That what gets us all making three hunred dollars a week kinda thinkin.
disclaimer..
This is just my 2 cents, and your results may vary, hope you get your home time

Some of the so called DBL's think they are God. I don't subscribe to that. Screw em. The one I had was a bonehead.

it is statement like these that make me thank my lucky stars for my DBL. He is awesome, gives me miles, I always get paid right, and I am always home on time. If I could just work on his sense of humor(he is coming around) I think things would be perfect!
