Look, seriously, I am not trying to beat you down. You expressed your vent/rant & I am just trying to give you my point of view & why others here don't really agree with your idea of tipping in this specific scenario.
I understand that the delivery you made was difficult but, just as anyone else who would have made that delivery, it comes under "what it takes to get the job done". Its part of your job description & what you accepted when you made the decision to take employment with that company for that job.
So, in short, regardless of what was involved to get the job done, it was part of the job you get paid for. There was nothing that you done that was over & beyond what was expected to get the job done. You didn't do anything that wasn't required to get the job done by anyone that would have delivered that load.
A tip is for exceptional service that is above & beyond the required service.... or, what another driver (anyone else) would have done in that situation.
Again, as in my previous post, if my wait staff just takes my order, brings it to me & brings my bill, they wont get a tip cause that's all that's required. If they bring me 5 glass' of tea during my meal (as a waitress did in Texas Roadhouse in Bossier City, La last Saturday), before my glass gets less than 1/4 from the bottom, she gets a tip.... & in that case, a NICE tip. She went over & beyond her normal required service. That's what a tip is for. Oh, & just FYI, I never asked for any of the 4 glass' of tea extra. Every time she came by the table, she didn't ask, she was attentive enough to notice I was getting low & just brought it on her way back out & set it down.

I am really surprised at the people who disagree with me about tipping the delivery guy. I am logging off for now.

I’ve worked for Pepsi and Sysco so most of the deliveries I did were to businesses. The one time I did delivery a special to a home I got tipped 20 bucks which was sweet, but I did not expect it cause I was doing my job. I do agree that it is the drivers job and that’s what they signed up for, but it is still nice to get a tip or free food(Which is what I mainly got). I had some furniture movers move a couch and love seat up 4 flights of stairs and take my old one down. I gave them 20 bucks a piece, some snacks and sodas for their work.

When I was at the bottom of the city board doing residentials with a liftgate all week, I would routinely be offered tips, more often than not by working class homes. I always tried to refuse them, sometimes they would allow it, others would insist. I never expected or sought a tip though. I was paid very well by the hour, and was happy to take care of the customer. If it took me a few extra minutes to make a better service experience for the customer, it was worth it. The way I saw it was that with such fierce competition in LTL right now and the AMZ unknown, it's the right thing to do for the company and my long term job stability to make the customer expect good LTL service as opposed to garbage Amazon level service.
Hell, I've even been asked if I want to come inside and "relax since her husband won't be home for a few hours" by a woman who's entire interaction with me was in a robe after dragging 6 skids of flooring into the garage. "Would love to but no thank you".
Take pride in being a professional.
ETA: Bringing a skid into a garage is NOT inside delivery.Last edited: Feb 6, 2019
