With a nod to JimDriv3r: TRUCK DRIVERS DON'T LIKE SURPRISES... GET ON OUT THERE AND BE SEEN, ESPECIALLY IN DAYTIME HOURS (one more reason to run with lights on 24/7). ONLY FOOLS COME ROARING UP ON TRUCKS AND SPLIT TO EITHER SIDE... YA READ ABOUT THOSE POGUES IN THE OBITUARY COLUMN, 10????????
Respecting TRUCKS OTR (am I right?)

The only thing I can add is gravity plays toll on a truck. He's gonna lose speed going up hill and gain speed going downhill. A trucker will try to attack a hill full force to keep his momentum going. Try to give him his space.
Try not to hang out beside a trucker. One, he needs the out in case of an emergency and two, a tire blow out can go through your windshield.
Truckers know where the cops are. Flashing would just get you possibly in trouble. Cops hate that if they catch you.
Lights are our enemy as they tire your eyes and cause fatigue. Bright flashes are like brain shock when you are tired.
Truck mirrors seem to amplify the light.
Thanks for your concern

Thanks for all the great info everyone! The explanation re: use of brights makes complete sense. I'll definitely flip my lights on and off from now on. I thought about getting a CB radio, and now I definitely will, especially since I'm doing about 1500 miles a month now.
I'm a bit anti-social, love to drive, hate holidays because my family is insane and finally, I'm a workaholic...DURN, shoulda been a trucker I think.
For those of you who thanked me for being respectful of truckers, thanks to my Uncle Bob! He drove for JB Hunt during many years I was growing up and I rode with him OTR for about 6 weeks every summer from ages 8 to 11. He cussed at 4-wheelers a lot, so I learned early! Hands down, the best times of my life to this day. Thanks to everyone who answered...great info and I'll definitely pass it on.
P.S. One more thing that's just common sense...if I'm going slower than a truck for some reason, and I see one coming up behind me, I'll move into the left lane if possible to allow them to pass on the right so they don't have to move over to pass me. I mean obviously it's easier for me to switch than for a big rig, right? They usually blink their lights at me after they pass, so I assume that's a good move on my part...I'm amazed others don't so the same for truckers. Also, I never ever ride behind a truck on purpose, only if we're in construction or on a 2-lane road or for some other reason that I can't get out from behind a truck.Last edited: Jun 16, 2010
