    hi all, a mate of mine has a volvo 500, the retarder will work and then not work and then work again, he has had it to volvo but they have no idea what is wrong, can anyone help please ?

    are you putting any weight on your clutch or throttle? this will cancel the effect.

    Does it happen at a specific point on your RPM reading or power band?

    Also be sure your jake on/off switch is fully engaged.

    If it is an exaust brake, they often use a pneumatic actuator...i have had one go intermittentlu bad before it stopped working entirely...
