SITUATION: I am a retired E9 (Army) with 27 years of service. I am a company driver with ALL endorsements, I am single, no kids and am moving to the Tulsa Oklahoma area. My retirement/VA checks cover ALL my bills (Mortgage, utilities, phone, food, Veh insurance...no other bills) , Medical/Dental insurance is already covered and I still have a good chunk left over at the end of each month ($$$ to burn).
My goal is become an O/O after a solid two years of flatbed OTR as a company driver.
Being retired military, no wife, kids, mortgage and bills are already covered...I am extremely business savvy, I love driving, hard work and I am OCD when it comes to paperwork and maintenance.
I have $75K ready to throw towards a down payment on a tractor/trailer
QUESTION: would you recommend going O/O?
Retired military and single

If it's what you want to do then give it a try you only live once. I wouldn't put the whole 75k down though maybe half. You'll need the other half for unexpected expenses and to operate until your payments start coming in. NOTE I am not an owner operator. I have been reading a lot over the last several years on this site on advice from owners and think this is what most would advise. Good luck I won't be to far behind in you

Wise Plan, Stay the course as a Company driver for 2 yrs to learn the ins/outs, trucking is not Rocket Science but the learning curve being a Company man over a period of time will give you the costs equivalent of fuel, maintenance, break-downs, shop-time, MPG's all of which will effect your bottom line as an owner-op. Many of us out here are JUST FINE being company drivers and you might come to that conclusion as well.

SGM, what's your current experience level? I would get, at a bare minimum, a full 2 years before considering a truck of your own. And it also depends on how you want to run.

Forty grand would get you a decent truck pre-emission 2003 or older. Limits who you can work for, but easy to maintain.

I didn't retire, but my 50% VA disability rating covers my bills as well. No family either, and I'm also thinking I should too should do about a year or two as a company driver before I become an o/o.
I think in that amount of time I'll know for sure if it's a career for me, but I can't wait to do this.wore out Thanks this. -
