If you want to keep your experience current, I see no other way to do that than to work part time. I’m sure there’s outfits out there that need a standby or fill in driver, and are willing to pay for the privilege.
Retired recently. Want to keep CDL valid and usable.

Exempt means you don’t have to comply with the federal or state medical examination requirements (49 CFR part 391 or Minnesota statutes 221.025). Non-exempt means you do have to comply with the medical examination requirements.
Answer the questions below to help you find out if you are exempt or non-exempt.
- I drive a CMV for my job as a federal, state, or local government employee.
- I drive a CMV to transport human corpses, or sick or injured people.
- I drive a fire truck or rescue vehicle during emergency situations and related operations.
- I primarily transport propane winter heating fuel during emergency situations that require immediate response, such as after a storm or flooding.
- I drive a CMV when responding to a pipeline emergency, such as a leak or rupture.
- I drive a CMV on a farm that does custom harvesting, or to transport farming equipment and supplies. I do not transport hazardous materials that require a placard on the vehicle. I do not drive a combination vehicle. I do not drive further than 150 miles from the farm that does custom harvesting.
- I am a beekeeper, and I operate a CMV to transport bees during seasonal months.
- I drive a CMV as a private motor carrier. My passengers are not using the vehicle for business purposes.
- I transport migrant workers.
If you answered no to all of the questions above, you are non-exempt interstate, and you must provide a current medical examiner’s certificate (also called a medical certificate, med cert, or DOT card). Most interstate CDL holders are non-exempt interstate (category 1). In Minnesota, all CDL holders with a school bus endorsement must submit a current medical examiner’s certificate.
You must choose non-exempt interstate commerce if you drive both exempt and non-exempt, in order to qualify to do both.
You may certify as category 1 if you are operating only in Minnesota (intrastate) but are eligible for U.S. (interstate).
When you work for several companies where at least one is non-exempt, you must certify in a non-exempt category.
It seems a bit confusing because nothing is mentioned about if you have a CDL but are no longer driving a CMV but just want to retain your CDL.
It is something I will be asking the DMV about in the next couple days. -
I am in a similar situation.
Hope to make it to late fall next year bit could go at any time.
Will keep my CDL valid and comply with regs concerning a DOT physical by a physician on the list.
My decision could be altered by a pending move to SD.omaharj Thanks this. -

Local School bus driver....
My 69YO neighbor does it. Sign on every year and get the 2500$ sign on bonus from the state, work for three weeks then quit.
The county he resides on got wise to his scam after 3 years, and wouldn't hire him back, so he commuted to the next county over and worked for them for a year (3 weeks), then applied back to his home county who gave him 4500$ as a rehire bonus for a year (3 weeks).omaharj Thanks this. -

Heheh, nevermind.

I just went in to the DMV to self-certify without the medical card. After I explained my situation to her she bumped me down to category 2 - Exempt Interstate.

How about delivering new trucks ? I looked into it one time I thought they said it basically pick your own loads and work as much or as lot as you wanted. You have to have triples endorsement but. You would have fly there and back for home time probably on your dime. But once there you can do as many trips or as few. They fly you back to truck factory. I don’t know much at it now since trucking is slow. Just something that might be possible
