Hello,
I am near military retirement and am looking into various new careers, one being that of a owner operator driver. I am looking for recommendations from those out there that are doing this. Unlike most I'll have my military retirement which includes health care so that's one benefit others might not have. Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I would think it would be wise to drive for someone else for a couple of years to gain some experience,.

Check into driving for an expedite fleet owner . You'll be treated with respect and appreciation - something you won't find with the OTR carriers that have far more applicants than they need .

Thanks for the thoughts. If I were to start with a company would you recommend that I do so driving their equipment or my own? Also can you recommend any good companies to start with? Is anyone familar with companies that utilize drivers with security clearances?

In expedite when you drive for a fleet owner you operate like an O/O . You pick and choose your loads and when you take time off . Most expediters start this way then get their own truck in a year or two . They also do government work so ask Panther and FedEx Custom Critical recruiters about work requiring security clearances . I tried to join the USMC to fly F-4's but the Marines wouldn't accept me so I joined the Navy & flew A-4's. The reason the USMC wouldn't accept me is because both my parents were married.
Enjoy your retirement for a while & drive for a company until this economy gets better as suggested many times in your thread..
