Hey yall,
I'll make this as short as I can, and yes, I've read dozens of 'what company' threads, hoping to get some specific questions answered now. I am retiring from the USN and I start CDL school next week. My list of companies that LOOK good are: Schnieder, CRST, McElroy and TMC. The pay seems competitive between those 4, around 44 CPM starting, and they all have the 'appreticeship' program to recoup money from the MGI bill. Schnieder really seems to be tops so far...
I don't really care what I haul as long as it aint tankers...waited 20 years to grow a beard, and it's only half gray. I live in Jasper, Ga, so Im guessing that will make a big difference in hometime if Im having to go back and forth from Atlanta all the time. I fully expect to get backdoored my first year, the wife and family are prepared for it, but I'm the loyal type, don't like quitting, so I want to make sure I pick the best company I can right off the bat.
Anyways, thanks for reading, and thanks for any advice yall have!

There's more with the apprenticeship program:
Melton Truck Lines
Jim Palmer Trucking
Contract Freighters (www.cfidrive.com)
Keim TS
Wil-Trans ~ stays in Eastern half of USA. This company also owns Jim Palmer Trucking which runs coast to coast.
You can park the truck at home or a safe place nearby.
Don't let CPM be a deciding factor; look at accessorial pays also. I was making .36 cpm but at the end of the year made $65K due to accessorial pays and lots of miles. Ran legal also.Last edited: Nov 1, 2017

Great advice man, how do I ask the right questions about accessorial pay? I'll check out the others on the list, thanks man.

Some accessorial pays are listed on the websites and some you have to ask what they are.
An example is "tarp pay" which is pay for tarping a flatbed load. Many other pays that vary by company.
Here's accessorial pay off the Contract Freighters website:

Certain ZIP codes: An extra $50 for deliveries to or from certain zip codes mostly in New York City and Long Island.
Cartage and other local: For trips shorter than 100 miles, earn your mileage rate plus an extra $20 per load.
Layovers: After 48 hours, earn $75 per 24 hours of layover time.
Noncustomary work: An extra $17.50 per hour for assignments outside normal scope of work that don’t fall into other additional-pay categories.

First thank you for your service. If it was me a lot of companies are basically the same with small differences. So make sure of what you want to do, home time,is there driver unloading, what part of the country do you want to run in,Ive never worked for Schneider but have heard they are one of the top hiring companies of military personnel. And cpm isn’t the most important.Flats are going to be more labor at first until you gain experience tying down and tarps.Reffer have more wait time loading and unloading typically.Make a list of what you want and see who comes closest.Good luck squid

Some trucks are really nice with refrigerator/freezer, power for flatscreen TV, computer, video game equipment, auxillary power unit so you can have electrical power for everything plus air conditioning & heat; without idling the truck engine.Oldironfan Thanks this. -

How far is Winchester Tennessee from you

The companies on your list are all good for entry level. Also, your military background will be a big help. I imagine you retired at least a chief petty officer. Your supervisor and management experience will come in handy if you decide to take an administration position after a few years. Or perhaps you'll spend twenty years sailing down the highway. You're at the perfect age to start Otr. Best of luck and thanks for your service to our nation.

Having driven for both Schneider and McElroy I cannot recommend either but will say that McElroy was the better of the two.
