Hello...I suppose I could call some recruiters and get some opinions but I thought I would pose it to the community first. I had to stop working in 2010 due to liver failure. I was placed on the transplant list and finally received a transplant in Jan. 2012. I started to work part time in 2013 delivering auto parts and have been working for just over a year now. I used to drive trucks in the past so I'm familiar with the industry and I want to return. I am confident I can pass a DOT physical no problem. My question is this? Will trucking companies shy away from me with this medical history? I don't want to invest in CDL training only to find that I'm unemployable. I'm 59 now so time is of the essence. What do you think?

If you can pass a DOT physical, I believe that it would be illegal for a company to refuse to hire you based on your transplant. However, I would be cautious about disclosing that fact to a non medical person. I am not sure but I would be tempted to write on you application where it asks about any surgery in the past, "discuss with medical personal only".

With the new pre existing rules in Obamacare it should not be as big a problem as it would have been. Good luck.

What Meds are you on that might affect a drug test?

It all depends on your current condition. As far as a regulation on the liver there is none. The medical form does ask "Liver Disease, Yes or No" Whether it's history or present it does not say. On the other conditions they do specify.

If you have your health back I would CYA and say yes but when the doctor asks explain the situation and he'll make notes in the remarks section like "not an issue".

I don't think it will be an issue. They are mainly concerned you don't have a condition that will effect your driving like passing out, can't see, delayed motor skills or the ability to use the controls.

There are plenty of carriers who will view your situation and hire you upon passing a DOT physical, but do not be so quick to discuss details of your condition except with a medical examiner. If you can perform the essential functions of the job you seek and a medical examiner certifies you as qualified, that is all that matters. Just be sure to include all the details of your condition and do not omit anything. The more medical documentation you can bring the medical examiner from your doctors relating to your condition the better. It will show the medical examiner you are monitoring your condition closely. Under the circumstances, the most you can qualify for is a one year medical certification, which is not a problem since your condition needs more attention. I can relate to you as I have dealt with peripheral vascular disease due to a genetic defect in my liver for the past 10 years. It has not kept me from getting re-certified each year. I just need to keep providing the medical examiner, usually a different doctor each year, with medical records showing my condition is stable.

Best wishes to you. Glad you are doing well. :)

Naturally I take an anti-rejection drug but it causes no side effects and I doubt it would even show up on a test since they're not testing for it. When I began interviewing for jobs I found that employers were hesitant to to hire me upon learning that I had a transplant. Fortunately the manager of the store where I now work hired me on a hand shake. I truly don't think he ever looked at my application. Based on this experience I've learned that the less you share the better however I don't think I can hide the fact that I was on disability for three years when trying to re enter the trucking industry especially in the current regulatory environment.
The school that I plan to attend require a DOT exam and I intend to do that locally. If I already posses a current DOT card than I hope that I can side step that when applying for a job.

The 3 years on disability has been followed by more than a year working, so you can get past this. Your medical condition is private, so discuss only with doctors and not recruiters, etc who are not qualified to determine your fitness for duty status. Is there a reason you wish to leave the company you are with now? You do not need to give any details. I am only asking because this company gave you a job.

Thanks for your reply TomOFTx. My current job is only part time, delivering auto parts. Low pay, no benefits, not a career position.

Allowable prescriptions I would think should be the only concern. I've seen too many drivers lose cdl because of them
