    truck is a 1986 Pete 359.

NYS Trooper gave me a inspection last week and wrote me up for “no reverse lamp”. The truck does not have a reverse lamp.

I spoke to Knoxville TN Pete where the truck was purchased new and they say the truck wasn’t built with a reverse lamp.

I contacted the service dept at The Pete dealer in Utica NY and asked if the 1986 model year required a reverse lamp. He said the NY state safety insp rules state all vehicles mfg after 1969 require at least one reverse lamp.

I don’t want to install one if I don’t have to. What gives?

Any rule stating that reverse can’t be on a switch not tied to transmission ?? If not wiring in a simple back up light would save tons of time... and I agree that’s a BS ticket since you have a trailer behind you

Or just turn on you rear cab load lights when the cop tells you to put it in reverse. I've seen many new trucks use the loading lights as reverse lights, I actually just fixed them on a 2009 Cascadia, so there's apparently no rule stating that they have to be at the rear of the truck.

In Canada, anything built after 1971 was required to have a reverse light.

the current rule (393.11) says the light must come on when the vehicle is put in reverse. To me that means tied to the trans somehow but as long as I don’t forget to flip the toggle on the shifter he wouldn’t know.

I was really trying to find out if anyone here knew when that reverse lamp law came into effect. Or if someone has a rule book from 1986 lol. Based on what Utica Peterbilt told me above it looks like I have to install one

I don't know when it came into effect, but it's looking like you need them. The easiest/cheapest way is to to add the switch to the trans and wire them to your load lights. Personally, I find them annoying on many trailers though, a white or stainless trailer, they blind you more than help you at night if they reflect off the front of the trailer. I know Optronics makes standard 4" round and oval LED lamps that have a reverse light built into them. Grote and Truck-lite probably do as well. They'd just replace you're current bulbs and you'd still have to wire the reverse, but you wouldn't have to add a bracket or drill a hole for a new light. There's a bunch of different styles.

As far as Pete not showing them installed, that doesn't mean they weren't required, it's not uncommon if the truck was built for a specific application that required finishing by another company. Our car haulers are ordered with no lights at all on the rear of the tractor, no 5th wheel, not even a 7-way plug. All that is finished at Cottrell when they build the head rack, so Pete has no records of those parts.

Edit: We use the oval version of these on our trucks. The factory Cottrell reverse lights are mounted behind a hydraulic cylinder and are pretty useless.

Reverse lamp in the tail lamp is going to be the ticket I think....not much extra space left back there.

DD49AF0D-C5A4-48D1-A3DB-987A7A42B047.jpeg So I took a look at the top of my 15 speed looking for a reverse switch of some sort. I don’t see one nor even a place to put one. Shouldn’t there be a hole in the cover to the rear and drivers right of the shift tower?
