rf gain vs squelch

    I never understood why these are both on a radio. Squelch blocks out weak signals and rf gain amplifies them right? So why not just scrap one of them and just have squelch? Seems lime they go against each other...

    Squelch silence the audio for signals below a level set by the control

    RF gain attenuates the input to the radio from the antenna

    The RF gain (decrease) can help to limit incoming transmissions to only NEARBY transmissions. Also, RF Gain usage is helpful on days when static "noise" is unusually high. While they seem the same, experiment a little as they can cut out a lot of garbage if properly set, while insuring nearby transmissions get through.
