I need to crimp on a PL-259 connection to RG58 coaxial. What size die do I need to use in a crimp tool to get it done? Thanks!

I wouldn't use a crimp on PL259 or RG58 on any radio I own. Have someone put a solder type PL259 on for you, you may be stuck with RG58 coax in the truck, and it can be a real pain in the ##### to change.

Do you recommend RG8 vs. RG58? Can a CB shop sodder on a PL-259 connection? Thanks for your guidance!

and yes a shop will solder it on, but why spend that money.... their are a bunch of type that dont need to be soldered. Their are a few at radioshack that all you need to do is strip the coax for an inch and tighten a screw down, and your done... check radioshack out for a few other types on connections, or use the one you need to crimp and if you ever need to take it out cut the connector off.

I don't know about anybody else, But I try to solder ALL electrical connections. There are times when I just don't have the room or time, but I almost always go back latter and fix it, soldered connections are much less prone to problems.

i am the same way, but i have used the solderless tips, they have never given me a problem. i have it installed on one end of my cable, its nice, you strip the outer shield, slide the connector over and tighten a screw which digs past the first 2 layers and hits the center copper core. they work well and are very easy.

After reviewing numerous antennas and their performance, I decided to go with a K30 magnet mount antenna vs. a fiberglass whip on my spare tire carrier. I understand that the ground plane available on your roof can greatly improve performance. Now I just need to figure out how to tune the thing!

RG8X mini form with a stranded centre conductor is the best coax most of us can afford for mobile installation. Solder on PL259 is the right way to go, and yes a CB shop should be able to put one on for a couple of bucks.
