I am considering buying my own truck. I've been driving a company truck and driving for a short time for that matter. I know sooner or later I would get my own rig. I would love to get a 379 or W9 but I keep hearing to get something cheaper and better on fuel if I wanted to make money. I understand that completely and would like to make good money but I still want to ride looking good and get something I've loved since I was a little boy. I'm saving money right now so I can have a down payment and cover expenses when something breaks. I just need some input. .. Thanks
Ride to look good or ride to make money? What should I buy?

If you dont like your truck, why drive it?
Semi Crazy, BigD09, Old Man and 6 others Thank this. -
You could get 20 miles to the gallon and still not make any money. You buy what is needed for the job. Look at the motor and transmission not the wrapper. What you plan to haul also plays a big role in the truck.

Sorry, useless thread.
You will get 200 different answers from 200 different people
I doubt anyone is buying trucks to not make money though, so not understanding that I guess.
Also depends on the stuff you haul. A crapcadia etc would do me no good at all, seeing as I am always @14' wide and 14'2 tall when loaded. I also get paid a hell of a lot more than 90 some cents a mile too obviously.
I make money at the mpg I now get with a Western Star, which is about as bad as anything else out there for mpg
To me,.I would rather have something that will last 10+ years, and freightliner etc don't cut it anymore. Been there and done that, and now see the light!

The way I see it. If you only buy a truck to look good. Get a show truck and sit at the chrome shop. Sure having that shiny truck makes you feel like a ###### until you realize that your going to have to sell it for pennies on the dollar because you are broke. First priority should always be business. If you can get a striped down truck that's great on fuel, then you can customize it with the fuel savings.

I would buy one of those used KW's from Melton Truck Lines; they look good and have APU's. Then I would pull a flatbed or tanker; look good & make money.

I'm working for a company hauling mostly beer to the northeast in a dry van....44-46,000lbs mostly. If I bought a truck I would still work for them. I know they do sell some of their company trucks for very cheap.

Well you need to like living in your truck. If you do, You will likely work more. so liking your truck does affect your bottom line. However all the rates and costs have to appropriate to make sure your making more money when you work more, and not just depreciating your equipment faster than you can accumulate capital to replace/fix it and provide yourself/family with food and shelter. After that it depends on where your priorities lie, do you want to go on a vacation/buy toys or is your truck your vacation/toy... or possibly can you get the best of both worlds?

A good looking truck can be a money maker . It impresses customers and is less likely to be selected for random inspection .

When you go with a w900 or 379 you get more then looks you get value, more comfort the interiors don't rattle after a bunch of miles and when you choose to sell them if you do that is you can get decent money instead of praticly giving it away like them old freightliners or internationals
exhausted379, 281ric, BigD09 and 1 other person Thank this.
